I just retired a set of wheels I built in 1990 with Suntour Superbe Pro hubs. The hubs still spin great. I replaced the wheels to go to a cassette. New wheels are Dura Ace 7700. My commuter has Dura Ace 7400 hubs. I built the wheels on my Trek with XTR 950 hubs. My other mountain bike has the cheap DX hubs, but I have a set of XT 737 in the wings.

I worked in aerospace for 30 years. I think you need to reconsider your example of precision instruments.
