I picked up this old Gt Aggressor last winter for a about $150 bucks. Its a solid old tank of a mountain bike that rides great in the snow. The drivetrain
is starting to get a little rusty from all of the salt on the roads this year. I'll probably replace the chain and front chainrings and rear cassette as cheaply
as possible since this is my winter commuter beast and doesn't see much actual mountain biking action. Its slow, but it's fun as hell in the snow!
Here she is outside of my lab after a nice snowfall.

Firstly thanks for the compliments on my bike! I love it and it has not let me down yet. I haven't posted in a year so here is an update.

This winter I decided I wanted more aggressive tires. Last winter I was using the stock tires that came on the bike which were great but lets face it didn't stand up to the ice and snow that I was riding on daily.

So this year I thought, STUDS!





I think I went a little overkill, however I don't feel bad about it. They grip like I am glued to the road, even on pure ice or hard packed snow! The rear tire has 250 screws in it and the front has 125, yep I used 375 screws!!!!! All are 1/2" steel screws.

Looks like you shoulda gone 3/8"! Great job, though, I admire you DIY spirit. I broke down and bought some commercially studded tires.

Depends on what winter is looking like... our main roads were pretty clear yesterday and a little hard pack isn't anything I can't handle on a road bike with 700:32 tyres.

Here's mine. Schwinn Vintage road bike with Nokian W106 studded snow tires. I just got the tires recently so i haven't taken it for a ride in the snow yet. I should be able to test them out this week with all the snow we are supposed to get though.

Thanks GriddleCakes. This is my third winter commuting everyday. I've ridden thru it all. And you still learn as you go. I keep a journal of what I wear in certain conditions. And its come in handy several times. The one thing I've learned about riding in frigid temps. Is that the toes are the hardest thing to protect from the cold. Not anymore. I normally wear a size 11 Snow sneaker from LL Bean. Those keep me warm from 42f to 10f, with the socks doubled up. Last year I rode in a record cold, -14f. And my toes felt like they were going to snap off. It was painful. I used hand-warmers on the toes and even those didn't work very good. I checked out folks in Alaska to see what they do in those temps. And that's where I first heard of the NEOS's. I work inside the Post Office and all of our carriers where them. But I thought they'd be too bulky for riding. When your're riding in four inches of snow and it's about 6 degrees the last thing you're thinking about is having a good training run. And I don't ride that way anyway. The problems I was having was my goggles fogging up in anything below 18f and my toes getting unbearbly cold below 15f. Well the NEOS's solved the cold toe problem and I also figured out the fogging up goggle problem. In the picture above I have on my sub-zero outfit that I wear when it's below 12 or something like that.
We have the Wickers Expedition balaclava from Sierra Trading Post with Uvex Flex seal goggles. These goggles won’t fog up on you with your mouth and nose covered up. Above those temps I normally wear Visorgogs. But those froze up on me. But I prefer those over the Uvex. The Uvex feel like I'm scuba-diving. The Loki Mittens is what keeps the hands nice and toasty (with a cheap cotton glove liner). And the NEOS Overshoes on the feet to keep the toes warm. And of course, the Showers Pass Century jacket that is about worn out. With a Sporthill Traveller jacket as a base layer. I’ve got my work pants on with the Sporthill XC pants over those. With some excellent Merino Wool hunting socks from Bass Pro Shops. If you want to stay warm and comfortable out in these frigid temperatures then you got to get good gear.

True 'nuff. The most common question I get from non-cyclists in the winter is "Aren't you cold?" The answer is always a grin and a negative, and I'm never lying.

I don't think that they believe me after the temp drops below 10F, though. My beard gets pretty icy, and I'm sure that looks mighty cold. I can generally judge how frosty it looks by the level of bemused grinning versus outright laughter I get from passing skiers.

In the summertime I´m C&V roadie turning into a hybrid runner in the winter. This winter has been dreadful for those of us who cant swap the roads for other modes of training. Ask my b*lls...

After a few hard winters and a spell where she got loaned out and abused the UAV needed some love and a little refitting so she'd be ready for more of what she does best.

Changed my stem and bars, replaced the bottom bracket with a cartridge unit, added some unbreakable steel fenders, and changed my saddle as the ancient Lycette finally died.



She's the perfect bike for our spring time roads that are covered in potholes and frost heaves, icy patches, and lots of wet and dirty riding and is just a great bombproof bike to get around on in any kind of weather.

I think it looks great! I would love to put the same hubs (except with 8 speeds) on my winter bike. Looks bullet-proof and sexy at the same time. Congrats on a great build!

heres the one i used this winter

heres the one i drove most of 2008-2009 winter. this thing ended up getting a complete rebuild. the handle bars, seat post and front section of frame are the only original parts on that bike. everything else has been replaced.

heres the bike i drove 2007-2008 winter and may more winter before.

My winter ride is just waiting for some snow... have refitted her with trekking bars and lighter fenders for summer use as we do hit the trails and she's an excellent rain / foul weather bike too.

Thinking this will be winter number three for the Shasta.

Spent the past few days getting the Shasta ready for the winter of 2010 - 2011 and with my back giving me hell figured that I should think about going back to riding a 3 spd in the winter... so I built up a new wheel for the U.A.V. and picked up some new fenders too.
