Which version of Tiagra 10 speed derailleur? Do you have an indexed shifter? A Tiagra 4700 derailleur will not work with a 7 speed indexed shifter. A Tiagra 4600 will. If you have a friction shifter, either will work

A 10sp dérailleur might not fit the wider 7sp chain.
This site: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Bicycl...ing_Dimensions implies that Shimano derailleurs all have the same motion ratio. If that is true, the index clicks ought to work, but I'm not a Shimano expert.

The rear derailleur moves continuously in (cable pull) and out (return spring)
between the stroke limit screw settings [high normal type]
"speeds" is the number count of the stack of cogs on the rear wheel..

There are varying Shimano derailleur swing ratios, i cannot use my classy polished Tiagra derailleur with my 10sp XT shifter, because the XT is Dyna-Sys and the Tiagra is not. So i have to use the yobbo XT derailleur.
