Ok after few days of digging on the net, I started to focus my search on a Sugino75... against all odds, and good advices provided on this thread...:-)

i was looking for a used set, found some keirin used material on the bay; End of the day got o new set for a fraction more than the used...

I got myself the cheap alternative for a sealed, s75 compatible bottom bracket from ben's cycle : PROTYPE 68 x 109mm ISO Taper -
I know it might sound strange to indulge on the crankset and go cheap on the BB, but let's say that it will give me a reason for further upgrading... when my wallet recovers

I concur. $92 for a stiff, light crank that is still probably overkill for a commuter ride:

Plus it is has a simple, dark, machined aesthetic which I like.

I personally would've gotten the Miche bottom bracket in 110mm for ~$10 less.

.... so, you came asking for advice. you received a bounty of wise advice. and ignored said advice to go with the most one of the most expensive cranksets, with least practicality for your application?

my face. i am palming it.

How's the riding in Paris?--I was idly considering moving there after college (moved to NYC, instead), but heard that all the cobbles make riding with thin tires a pain. But you mentioned looking for 23c tires, so I guess you're doing fine.

I think going for a cheap BB you may have lost any benefit of a nice crankset.

Exactly; I know how it sounds but you all know than choosing bike parts can be a irrational process where all input plays its part...

let's say I'm an self-declared hypocritical sucker and the title of this thread should probably have been: "I am drooling over a S75 and would like you guys to give me reasons to buy it, or not, and if not the relevance of your points will be gladly ignored but thanks anyway..."

Paris is great and if you understand dense traffic rules, cycling is the best way to go around and enjoy the city; it's not too big and you get a good variety of urban rides: small streets, big avenues, hills, riverside, lots of monuments and picturesque old world sceneries... not the greenest city to cross though but you can always go to the parks for sunday rides

Indeed you got a numbers of rough rides on cobblestones that can shake the sh*t out of you and the bike, but globally not half as bad of what I can remember (10 years ago) of NYC in terms of general road condition, esp 8th Avenue...

Many people ride 23c tyres in Paris yet it has never been the ideal commuting tyre in any city I guess... In fact, I use to ride a Badboy set in 35c, and one of the first things I changed was to go for thinner tires... then I moved to one of the stiffest manufactured frames on the market (available here), so it has to be good...

i guess my main reason for upgrading was mostly cosmetics and design...

Is that really the case? If so i'll just cancel the bid on Ebay and go buy the same protype BB. I thought it would play some role in how well the cranks spun.

Nope, pretty sure I was. I was going to ask scrod or something why yesterday but never got to it. On that topic, why did he get banned? gt35built does a worse job then adriano ever did lol.

Didn't think he would be the type to go through that trouble.. Who was he impresonating? Well, this kinda sucks lol. I mean he sounded kind of negative a lot but he knew his junk.. And he'd help you when it counted.. At least for me.

And also, man I'm like, who the hell is LowCel and all these other people! Hard to imagine there's a world outside of SSFG!
