If you rode to the top of Crater Lake my hat goes off to you. What a climb and if you rode down I’m even more impressed. I was stopped by a ranger on the way up in a rental car for crossing the center line too many times (thought I was drinking) once I showed him I was from Pa and the only way I would ride that close to the edge would be if I was drinking he said ok.

I have seen many beautiful bodies of water but nothing compares to Crater Lake that I have seen. Great photo also.

Thanks. Cycle Oregon '07. Climbed the 13 miles from Diamond Lake, rode around the rim road, and then rode back down to Diamond Lake. 6,400' of climbing (topped 7,000' four times) in 47 miles as the last 13 were nearly all down hill.

The cool think is that I will be doing it again this summer. The GF and I got two of the coveted slots in Cycle Oregon this year. (More than 2,200 slots filled in less than 40 min.). We will be riding up from the south this time. Riders will have the option of looping the lake twice. While it's a beautiful place, I am not that crazy.

Congrats on getting the two slots. That sounds like a once in a lifetime experience to share together. The photo is beautiful and for anyone that hasn’t seen it the water looks that blue in person if not more so. The combination of depth and volcanic ash and the altitude and clear skies, the only bit of the light spectrum that isn’t absorbed is that deep blue.

Keep this thread in mind after you do it this summer or start a new one. It would be great to hear about and see more photos.

Good luck on the climb and once around sounds like more than enough to me as well.

Deception Falls, near Steven's Pass on US Route 2 through the Cascade Range. I wouldn't recommend riding on the 2; it's kind of nice to do once, but also kind of hairy, with sometimes narrow shoulders, and most vehicles doing about 70 mph.

Creater Lake is incredible. I've only been there, once, in June, and wasn't able to camp where I had planned because of six to eight feet of snow on the ground. I was able to drive through, and camped at a lower elevation ... I think on Diamond Lake? Beautiful place, with beautiful surroundings, and I'd like to take my bike up there before too long. Enjoy your trip!

I was there on labor day quite a few years ago and it was a beautiful day warm and sunny. The park was to close the next day for the season as they couldn’t promise passable roads due to snow after that date. I guess it’s pretty easy to get trapped up there in a storm, plus it wouldn’t take much snow on those roads and I wouldn’t drive them.

So this is pretty off-topic in terms of posting photos of our bikes, and maybe trying to push people (a little bit) into going out and riding their bikes. But it's the kind of thread that's really made for tangents. And you're reminding me that I really need to take my bike somewhere that isn't all that far from me, for a great, incredibly scenic ride.

For no reason other than curiosity, is the road closure due to avalanche risk, or just not being able to plow?

You can barely make it out in this pic, but that's the James River in the background (lowest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia). Thirteen miles up the road is the highest point at about 4000 feet. No water up there though
