Bottom bracket shell cutouts, that is

On many frames the BB shell is as distinctive as the head tube badge/decal. So show us what you've got!

Hey DD, would you ever attempt to do your own custom "drain hole"? I assume most of your bikes already have them, but it seems up your alley.

Funny you should ask; yes, I did. I've neglected to get a photo of the BB shell on the drillium rig (Alpina), which has a slot or two - and a countersunk hole that I myself added. It took forever and a day to drill, too, which is why I stopped at one

I'll get a pic tomorrow and post it finally.

Some really nice submissions already - the biggest surprise was seeing that 3/4" hole on the bottom of Aaron's Marnati. That's the biggest single hole I've ever seen in a BB shell!

DD

Those are interesting "drain holes" DD, good thread. I was reading a special issue of Cycling Plus last week and for winterizing bikes they recommend drilling a drain hole (as you said "literally") in the bottom bracket for the actual purpose, including on aluminum and CF. Keep the water from pooling on the bearings and spindle was their reasoning.

I'm going to do this to my CAAD 10. They also recommend spraying a preservative in the BB shell and the frame tubes. Wonder why you don't see these anymore? I guess with cartridge bottom brackets mfgrs don't think its necessary like the artisans did.

I wish I had a hole The grease looked like cream.
I think drain holes ended around 1990?

Then I first got my Motobecane frame in '78, I was into trying to build a lightweight bike & figured drilling out the BB shell was the thing to do. In the process, the drill bit got stuck & I couldn't get it out to save my a**. I ended-up taking the frame to the shop where I bought the frame. When the owner saw what I did (after buying the frame from him), he just stood there & shook his head. He did get it out for me...duh!

Cool thread. All my bikes have closed BBs. I guess I have drain hole envy. Wait, that doesn't sound right...um, never mind...

For those with no hole: Morningstar (I think) sold a kit that allowed you to install a one-way valve in the BB shell.
They seem to have discontinued it, or maybe it was some other company:

DD- I would invert the nut on the Campagnolo cable stop, "acorn" like surface out. It will appear more "Masi"

The BB install is provisional yes? Or are you just looking for that period correct Campagnolo BB sleeve and could not wait?
