I was amazed to discover this new "gravel grinder" category. I used to take my cro-moly Trek Multitrack out on dirt/gravel roads back in 1995 so I know how fun it can be. I've still got one of those old Multitracks and I think it would be a terrific gravel grinder with it's MTB geometry. However, my main bike is shown here. I just got a set of Salsa Cowbell 3 handlebars and I just need to get some V-brake compatible brake levers and I'm going to start going for distance and I also plan to try out gravel grinding.

The old Trek 700 series framesets make great gravel grinders, that's what mine is. You can squeeze up to a 45mm tire on depending on the tread and brand. Schwalbe Smart Sam 40mm work great and give you enough clearance to shed a little mud and debris. They are extremely tough and comfortable framesets and can be had inexpensively. If you find a Trek 730 of about 1990 vintage, you have a treasure with the full cro-mo stays and fork. The 700s of that era had a cro-mo main triangle but hi-ten stays and fork.

building this frame up as a lightweight klunker I plan on riding on the trails and think it'll make a good fireroad gravel grinder. May put the rigid front fork on since the fat tires will give a lot.

My 19" 1995 Trek 730 was my first good bike and old Treks will always hold a special place in my heart for that reason. I also have a 21" 1995 Trek 730 that I bought a year or so ago and it's a better size for me. Both are Made in the U.S.A. True-Temper OX cro-moly throughout.

Yep, that looks a lot like my 1993 700 except mine is red with white graphics. Mine is also 21" with 40mm Schwalbe Smart Sams and is presently getting outfitted for gravel centuries. I've always wanted a 21" 730 frameset but they don't seem nearly as popular in this area. The entry level 700s are all over the place. I got a 19" one for a few hours of volunteering at a bike coop.

The situation is the same here. I watched Craigslist almost hourly for over 3 months before a 730 popped up. I'm not even sure that any 700/720 models were on the local Craigslist at that time.

I still check CL several times a day because I'm looking for yet another Multitrack. My only complaint about mine is that the fork has 40mm of rake which gives a very high trail measurement. The last year or two of Multitracks, Trek switched to a 50mm rake fork and I want to find one of these models for the fork. Since they are all threaded it unfortunantly has to be a 21" model. The last lears of production also had longer chainstays (44.5cm) than mine (43cm) but I like sport so I would keep my frame and add the slightly newer fork.

Same bicycle... I had the new powder done up last fall and wanted more in the way of a stealth finish and less of the 80's pastel blue.

The original paint was in sad condition and the bike really needed to be re-done.

Can't say enough good things about those Schwalbe Smart Sams in 40mm. They'll handle anything I have the guts to try on a rigid steel frame.

It's a really nice trend. Take your "general purpose" cyclocross bike, stop pretending that it's a CX race bike, give it capacity for even wider tires and maybe relax the geometry a bit. That's definitely a win for the people buying these bikes.

Now I'm scheming the idea of swapping all of my new components over to my 730, including drop bars, and setting up my more sporty Handsome Devil as a single-speed.

Trek Ion CX Pro frame, with Shimano 105-based 1x10 gearing (38 up front, 11-28 in the back) and a Paul chain keeper. Running tubeless 32mm Vittoria knobbies on (last year's) Ultegra wheels. Brakes are TRP CX8.4 Mini-Vs (which are insaaaaaane).


What a wicked bike. I've been rolling through post-typhoon debris this past week or so like it's nothing.

It's a Zefal Trail. I altered the mounting a touch by using zip ties at the seatstay bridge which places the fender further back while maximizing tire clearance. It's kinda floppy and doesn't provide extensive coverage, but it prevents skunk stripe and keeps your underseat bag and a stuff sack on the rear rack dry. Doesn't help the guy behind you much (read at all). If you're looking for a real fender, there are better options.


Thanks. It may be nostalgia, but I too like the classic lines of bikes from that era. I've ridden a Long Haul Trucker and didn't find it any more comfortable than my 20-year old 700. I checked the specs and the LHT is actually only about a half pound lighter than the 700 and I'm guessing about the same weight as a 730 (which as you know has the cro-mo stays and fork as well as the 700's main triangle).
