I know, but that's still a long time for riding and not eating anything. A ride of similar time for me is double that it kj's at least so there's no way I would ride that long and not eat.

I eat a light breakfast before I ride and consistently do 2.5-3 hour rides on just water. I know a lot of people who don't eat breakfast but prefer to eat during the ride. Whatever works. I've never bonked so in general I think I have a pretty good handle on it.

3x20's, 90' total. 100 tss. FWIW, I had two pieces of wheat toast with butter and jam and a cup of coffee. YMMV.

82-88% (Z3)
Admittedly, I didn't push super hard and I realize there's a danger of falling into the mushy middle if I make this the mainstay, but I wanted to give myself a reasonable, repeatable target wattage.

for sure.
edit: meant to add, that seems like a relatively low amount of TSS for a 90' ride with 3x20, so I was going to guess sub 90%

Alls I know is even when basically untrained my ftp was 4.4-4.5 and all it meant was 1) people scratched their heads when I languished for years because they'd see me on group rides smashing things, but group rides are 1.5hrs long and anyone can fake it for that length of time, 2) when I started training correctly I had really funny ctl numbers for a while because my ftp exceeded my actual fitness capabilities by a wide margin, 3) I raced dumb because I didn't realize I was wasting energy until I was out of energy because 250w felt easy until it didn't because I had no base and ****ty repeatability.
I mention the above because I've always had some FTP and have not always had endurance, which is what @grolby be sayin. The point is that it is hard to say one thing matters more in a race than something else because everything works together to make success happen. The racing silver bullet is consistency mixed with proper periodization and an occasional tub of ice cream.

are you saying something like 'i could ride 300w for 1h and collapse but i couldn't ride 2-3h @ 75% of 300'? or are you saying 'i could ride 300w for 1h and collapse but couldn't ride 180w for 5h'?
if so, how were you calculating your FTP? (i.e., had you done 300w for 1h in the example above?)
just trying to understand what you are writing.
lack of race results seems to be more about not being able to do repeated supra-threshold efforts, so what i think you are saying doesn't seem to match what i have observed.

20min x .95. That was my point, theres more to race fitness than ftp, being able to go above it over and over is just as important which was something i neglected. I also rarely rode real hours and had no base. Tri-fit.

i would guess that your FTP was overstated, not your that your FTP exceeded your fitness. that implies your FTP was real. common sins of estimating FTP. maybe as a trained rider, now, 95% of 20 is a better predictor of your fitness (for some people, 95% is NEVER a good predictor).
kind of different than 'tri-fit', as a triathlete's FTP can be real--they just can't exceed it by much and/or repeatedly.

Haven't been on a bike since Monday and was supposed to race both days this weekend, but I've been fighting a cold and don't want to risk making it worse. I am so envious of people without asthma that can ride when sick to 'blow it out', as some said recently. If I did that I fear I'd be sick for a month. It's happened before, and it sucks.

I do think there is a time to start being active when sick and I'm close to that (may even do an easy hour today), but probably still a good week off from real training. I can feel the FTP leaving my soul.

The f*uck? Don't you have a sh*t ton of kids (read: more than 2)? Two 6 hour rides within a year of each other for me would be a major accomplishment. Kudos.

Haha, yes, 3 kids, but they are in middle and high school and somewhat self sufficient, or at least old enough that they can be alone in the house for an hour or so without imminent risk of police, fire, ambulance, or social services.
Having said that, the 6 hour MTB ride was unintended. My brother-in-law's buddy was not really prepared for a big ride and cracked hard halfway through. I ended up leaving them in the woods once we got within a few miles of home and did get in a bit of trouble for being AWOL. Not really trouble, more like a minor karma deficit that will get balanced out the next time my wife wants to go out with some friends.

2hrs on zwift (again) lol i try to stay on the upper end of Z2, don't know if that's any more helpful than staying at mid to low end of the zone or what.

Group ride today. My speedplay pedal locked up at one point and then creaked really loudly the rest of the ride. I was worried it might annoy my fellow riders but luckily there was a dude with a HR monitor that was beeping every 30 seconds, I think he stole my spotlight

2x20's turned into 1x20 with some softpedaling (but hit wattage target) and 1x15 at wattage target, thanks to leafers creating the most absurd middle of nowhere traffic jam i've ever seen. 4:45, 250ish tss, pretty climbing once I got back into the middle of nowhere.
