Were you resisting with your legs to slow down at all? DOMS is much more strongly associated with eccentric contraction (contracting while lengthening) than concentric contraction.

This is true *but* the eccentric phase is very important in building strength (so don't just drop the weights).

I'd think constant pedaling probably has something to do with it as well. Most coast more than they are aware of during a workout.

Today is probably like another 1.5hrs easy, maybe 2 if it feels like my legs could use the wake up call. I was -37 on Monday so my tsb is just coming back positive today.

yeah i rode the FG into work today and the thing that hurt the most was definitely the eccentric stuff. i rode down some pretty steep hills the other day so that definitely didn't help. idk, maybe it'll have some type of making me strong effect.

fixed gear and easy rides don't really mesh. as I recall you have a fairly significant gear on there.

my commute is pretty flat. no power but my hr is usually ~100. i do a lot of stuff wrong, but i'm pretty good at riding slow/easy.

it still takes muscular effort to turn a fixed gear. what's your cadence?

If hair-splitting was a job, you'd be a pro.

Anyway, I ran 3.7 miles this morning; went great except for the part when I got mud all over my new shoes!!

I didn't say it was bad, only that it's well-established that it takes much less eccentric contraction to induce DOMS than concentric.

I'm skeptical that resisting the pedals will do you much good, since the load is so different from pedaling forward. If it hurts, try using the brakes? IDK. If braking a FG with your legs was a good workout, I think everyone would be doing it, right?

Not saying you should avoid braking with your legs if you want to, by the way. I just doubt it'll contribute to making you stronger.

I am guessing you have never ridden a fixed gear bike!

I hit 12k miles for the year on my ride today. I'm not really into numbers and this year I focused on quality over quantity, especially trying to do more climbing, but still stoked to end up with that many miles.
My off season has been different too. Last winter I was doing lots of 5+ hours on the weekend but I haven't had time so base has been more about getting in longer weekday rides and still keeping my Saturday ride around 3-4 hours. I've also kept up the intensity more this winter.

fixed gear right. divide the distance by the gear inches and time. what's the problem.

it's not hair splitting. a lot of experience with fixed gears tells me it's tough to do a recovery ride on one. if you have a decent sized gear, which I'm pretty sure Mike does, it doesn't really matter how slow you're going…you're still probably still putting out more effort than you'd like to on a recovery ride.

for christ's sake, he's the one who's sore…not me

if I were being serious I would have just said to divide your speed by the gear inches. nobody cares about average cadence!

I mean, people might not like my 20mph/220w AP recovery rides. Means different things to different people.

Your "recovery" rides makes your coach groan - this much I know!

This is my experience as well. I need to pick a really flat route and concentrate on riding easy if I want recovery on my fixed gear. And I have a fairly small gear on my fixed gear bike (67", I think).

But - enjoy the fixed gear riding mikey. It is fun.
