Late 80's RockHopper Sport

Picked this up off CL. Not 100% sure what the plan is yet with this one, but we'll see how it goes. It looks to be pretty complete with original equipment, so I figured enough C&V value to share. Anyone have experience with this Suntour/ DiaCompe X1 groupset? I googled enough to see that they are not very valuable, but was just curious if they work well. I have some old shimano stuff (Exage400 & Deore) I was going to throw on, since these shifters are frozen atm, figured I could just swap it all out. I guess I was mainly interested in the frame since it should fit me better than my current Rockhopper. Perhaps off to the powdercoater for this guy...

What I've found with the Suntour index systems is that the groups don't mix well. If you can get those shifters operational, it will probably work fine. If you are powder coating as a personal ride, I'd go to a deore group with some thumbies.

Love that bike. What kind of handlebars are you running? I have an SM700 and trying to find bars with a slight back sweep like that but not too much.

thanks, they’re origin 8 classic tour bars. I wanted some on-one Mary bars but nobody had them locally. A shop had these and they’re pretty similar. Check out the what bars website. Really helpful in visualizing what bars you might want.

Replaced headset, and BB. Threw on some Exage stuff, and some shimano hub (cassette) Araya wheels. And new shimano levers and trigger shifters on (uncut) origin8 Strongbow handlebars, attached to origin8 stem. I know it's funky to look at, but it feels like a decent fitting ride. I'll probably get some long silicone grips and wrap the front section too.

1996 Parkpre Pro 825

Picked this one up at the local bike co-op. Only the frame, front der, brakes, shifters and cromo front fork were original. The rest was a mash-up of old parts. I was mostly interested in the "Tange Ultimate Superlight MTB" frame. I was able to score an almost pristine Marzocchi DH3 air-suspension fork at the same place. Saved a couple of pounds by replacing the old tires with some new Schwalbe Racer Ralphs. Replaced the brakes with some old Avid Shorty 4s, and the cromo riser bars with and alloy flat bar. Replaced the crankset (which had 3 old and different brand chain rings) with a barely used TruVativ triple crankset and Isis BB, and replaced the seat post with an Easton. Working on replacing all the cables; still need to do the shifter cables. Frame looks better in the photo, than in real life. The titanium "coating" is chipped and worn off in many places, giving it more of a "rat-rod" look than pristine C&V, but I'm not interested in "restoring" this bike. I just want something to ride my local fire roads that won't beat me to death on the decent (like my '89 Bianchi Axis gravel bike), and that cost under $400. I only have $300 into it so far. Plans are to replace the wheels with some that are lighter, if and when I find the right deal. Bike weighs 25lb, now, down from the 27.4 it weighed when I bought it.

Looks awesome! Interesting to read about the 89 Bianchi Axis. My 02 Axis is a great riding bike. Is the 89 a aluminium frame or cro-mo?

25 lbs is a good weight for this age of MTB.

Nice stuff, dude! I'd love to know how you get on with the riser stem and trekking bar setup, I'm thinking of getting the same stem to run a Jones Loop on my touring bike. The sprung saddle seems clutch for a setup like this. Def a good idea on those silicone grips, I love them.

My SM700

Here's my 91 Cannondale SM700. I've had it since 2005 when my uncle gave it to me for college. Changed the handlebars, seat, and tires, that's about it. Still ride it for commuting, around town and the occasional trail ride

Thanks! The Axis is Bianchi Superset cromo, and tips the scale at 24.3 with 700x32 Clement X'plo MSO. And, while it rides great on street, bike path and flat hardpack, it's no match for the steep hardpack ruts and washouts found on SoCal fire roads. It rides better in these conditions than the alu Kona Jake it replaced, but I'm unable to fit anything wider than true 35mm on it. I like the idea of running 26x2.25/2.1, with a little cushy-ness in the DH3 front fork on the 825 Pro. It also has the added benefit of a lightweight, cromo frame that offers that springy steel feel.

thanks man! I was considering the Jones bar too, but I felt like the 45° sweep might be too cruiser like. I was hoping to hit some mtb trails too, so I wanted something that might provide some more control on steep descents.

been tempted on that 26 inch wheelset you have posted too! 10spd would be soooooo nice.

My recent 91 Gary Fisher Montare find has evolved nicely:

I added a $10 NOS XT left shifter, a co-op sourced Vetta Vuelta saddle with lots of Beausage, bar ends and used fenders. The saddle is like a wider, over-stuffed Turbo, very comfortable.

Then, I found a cheap NOS one on eBay! Bar ends just didn't feel right, so I removed them. Got some new grips only to find the GF bar body is several mm smaller than standard, giving a very loose fit. Replacement co-op bar FTW. Don

I so needed a winter beater MTB for today’s deliveries around town! Now I have to reconnect the hose and wash the 930SHX off.

Yes, I think they are but I tend to not follow developments in anything I own because they seem to try to make us feel bad for not trading up all the time. It works so I stick with it.

A neat stem I picked up from the LBS. costed nothing which is always good!

possible MTB project fodder I’m sure. Tioga Avenger in 130 length. A bit longer then I thought but still usable. Switching some of the bits for aluminium really drop the grams if I decide to.

1991 Trek 7000, bought 3 years ago for dirt. Keep it at work to ride. It was completely original including the original tires and tubes, but were dry rotted. It had been ridden just enough to have two patches on the rear tire. I have only put the new tires, tubes, chain and brake pads on it. Rides nice, shifts great, no adjustments so far. I wanted one of these in 91, but with a young family and on active duty, was tough to justify the expense of ANOTHER bike... I just missed getting a 91 Trek 1000 road bike recently. Would have been pretty cool...
