I'd be looking more in the $120-$140 range. Maybe offer that and see if he wants to deal, then settle in the middle somewhere. I'd say that's on the steep side, but it could be worth it to you depending on the condition of all the parts and how much you value your time, your money, and this particular model of bike.

I think it would be an OK commuter if it fits you, if it's in good shape, and if you have money to outfit it (think seat, handlebars, stem to fit your body) (lighting, reflectors, locks, racks) however you need.

I think you'd learn something from test-riding it even if you don't buy it.

Thanks. I sent an offer for $100 right before seeing your reply. Hopefully that’s not too low to elicit a counter. I’m sick of shopping and want a bike.

I want my first bike decent but cheap. I know nothing about what I want now but I’m sure I’ll be very preferenced in a few months.

Assuming it is in good condition with all components working properly that's a good choice for city/commuting/errands, etc. My wife has one - grip shifters with a triple up front, plenty of eyelets for racks, fenders - a decent steel frame/fork with canti brakes. You can probably fit some fairly big tires.

Good luck.

Is a 21" frame the right size for you?
The front tire is showing some sidewall wear or separation. May need replacing.
The Trek 720 was made for 8 years and was quite popular. Good choice as a commuter or city bike.
Lets us know how the negotiations went.

Why the weird listing price of $188? That always throws me a red flag when I see a price like that on CraigsList.

$188 means he did some weird calculation. Like that’s x percent of parts new. But if you ask a weird dollar amount, you’re either not really looking to sell or expecting rounded offers.

i upped my offer to $140 after he flat said no to $100. 21” probably is a good frame size for me. I’m 5 10 but with long legs. There’s another 720 for $150 that’s 22”. Think that’s close enough in size to check out in person? I prefer red to white, but if this guy isn’t gonna negotiate with such a strange price listed, then it’s not really an option.

Check-out the 22" (might actually be 22.5) - you will probably be able to stand over the top tube and also achieve a reasonable fit by adjusting the seat up/down and fore/aft.

I agree with what @jlaw said.

I live in a little podunk hicksville and we just don't have old bikes like this. As a consequence, I've never tried enough bikes to know what a good fit feels like. If I lived in a big place like Chicago with all those bikes I'd spend a couple months trying a bike every weekend, because then I'd know.

On my way to see the white 22. Offered $120, got $130 in return. Works for me. If it fits

purchased. fit me perfectly. i know my legs are a little long for my height, but online charts were saying i was around 19" for a hybrid frame -- no.

rode it 15+ miles home. no problems. back break isn't what it could be. the chain gets grease on my pants; not sure if there's any mod i can make to avoid that.

thanks, all, for the help in navigating the purchase. thrilled ...

oh. looking at the pic i took, it's clearly a 700 not a 720. unsure what the difference is. google did not immediately tell me.

Nice bike, congrats. - get some fenders and a rack?

What's the issue with the rear brake?

thanks! yeah, a rack is on my list. along with lights and a lock.

back brake doesn't stop the bike as quickly as it should. squeals and is sluggish. not a huge problem, but something i will eventually want to fix.

i just noticed it's a 700, not a 720. any significant difference? i'm thrilled with the purchase anyway. was in my price range and i like the ride.

I use a reflective wrapper around my pants legs to keep that from happening. I also tuck my laces into into my shoes to keep them from catching on the front gears. Walmart has a version of those wrappers from Bell but those suck, I wouldn't recommend those. REI has a pretty good one with velcro. https://www.rei.com/product/543017/j...band-15-inches

Somewhat heavier frame. Somewhat different components. But if you liked it riding 15 miles I'd say you're fine.

yeah i'm very happy with it, no matter the number.

good looking out on those bands from rei. will need something to stop myself from ruining all my pants until shorts season. which is apparently quite delayed here in chicago. people warned me before i moved here.

700 - 720 - wouldn't worry about it.

The cantilever brakes you have generally provide good stopping power, but can be prone to squealing if not adjusted properly - might be the 'toe in' is not correct. There are tons of previous posts on BF re: setting-up canti brakes - and on the web. Fortunately, your brakes should have adjustment mechanisms that make set-up relatively simple. If you have questions post a close-up picture or two. A new set of pads wouldn't hurt - Kool Stop pads are good quality and affordable - just make sure you get the right ones - many different kinds.

Yes, a good rechargeable tail light and head light are a must IMO. I have found Cygo Light products to be affordable and reliable - don't need the latest/greatest - lights from 2 or 3 years ago will be plenty bright and have good battery life. But, there are many good choices out there.

One possibility - head/tail combo pack - about $45:

On my 1995 19" MultiTrack 700, only the seat tube was chromoly; the rest was hi-ten steel. I believe the 720's for that year were all chromoly. The standover height on mine was about 30".

In my experience, MultiTracks do not come up for sale that often, and the 720's come up less often than the 700's. I would have gone for the 720 if the frame fit, but the fit of the frame is the critical factor.

I'm a fair weather rider so I just use a dry wax chain lube. I don't recall it ever staining my pants. After you degrease and clean your drive line, you could try that. They work well in dryer weather. Check your chain wear first though, so you don't spend time cleaning a worn out chain.

^welp, it's bought. the frame says "chro-moly main tubing." the 720 owner was unresponsive. this one fits. annoying that the 700 listing falsely said "720," but people's actions are often lesser than their intent.

cool thread, rseeker.

ordered the light kit you suggested, jlaw. gotta get my lock local with the 10.x percent sales tax because i need it immediately. i'd have paid that for the lights too, in order to support local. but when i googled it wasn't showing up in any shop inventory.

I believe that means the main triangle is chromoly while the seat / chain stay are hi ten (rear triangle).

From the photo, the bike looks more like a 21". What is the measurement from the bottom bracket to the seat post clamp?

Edit: Looks like a 1992 model.

it's 22" if you measure from the bottom of the bottom bracket, which is probably what the seller did. more like 21" if you measure from the middle. i think it is a 1992 based on the paint (found the 1992 catalog and the description on vintage-trek.com). the serial number has a 2 suggesting 21", instead of 3 for 23" or 22.5". there is no 1992 22". the serial number lines up with 1990, but that's not possible. i found one example of a poster calling the same paint job a 1993, but i think they are mistaken. the 1992 "fork" is indeed hi-ten. where as, that same year, the 720 had a chromoly fork.

You are suppose to measure from the center so 21". A 23" will have have a longer head tube.

these are nice and absurdly bright. unfortunately, they do not have a low battery indicator. or at least not one intuitive enough that i was alerted. headlight ran out last night in the middle of a rainstorm. i could have been using it at that moment. otherwise, thrilled with their performance.

I recharge my lights after about 6 hours of use. The batteries seem to be fine having done this for 2+ years.

The headlight will die out before the tail light. I use the headlight intermittently.

Congrats on the bike. I suggest a saddle bag and multitool to work on your bike. Other than that, as for lights, I purchased: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

works great. I actually threw the rear LED light in my junk drawer and just use reflectors for the back. IT didn't really fit on my seat post with my saddle bag and reflector so I decided not to use it, seems like more trouble than it's worth. The front light is awesome and has 3 light settings plus all 3 can be solid or blink. I have had the light for a couple months and only charged it once. I got probably 8-10 hours of use before it needed a charge.
