That Dahon is tremendous tds- is that rolling on 16"s?- I love the mudguard!
(I've never thought about hubs freeing-off with age; there's hope for some of the stuff I've got yet!)
You can configure them any way you want and the more you spend the lighter it gets, lol. Mine is just barely 19lbs. My Dahon Mu Uno is only a few pounds heavier but it rides quite differently. More cush from the 20" tires but it also feels like you are riding a bike - the pakiT just seems like it's not even there, it's just an extension of the body.

Well,...I put on some Continental Ride Tour 16x1.75" tires on it, Wellgo F265 folding pedals, Cloud9 bike seat, a more straight handlebar, got rid of the mini bar ends, put an inexpensive front fender on, and a few other small tweaks. I kinda have a vested interest in getting it to run nice & smooth now. Thanks for following along, and for the advice. I appreciate it,...

PS: I just ordered a set of Schwalbe Big Apple 2x2.0 tires. IMO nothing can beat them for ride comfort.

panniers are along side the wheel, on a rack, so by definition, it cannot be a pannier .

I was out for about 2 weeks.

Typical day was only about 35-40 miles, but with a ton of climbing. Strava registered over 5,000 ft for three of those rides. And I'm slow, so there were long days on the bike. But there's lots to look at.

Here's my route, mixing cycling with train trips.

Not at all. Prior to the trip I tried to learn some from a phrasebook, which I promptly forgot upon arrival - except for some key politeness items. Then I broke the camera on my phone, which disabled the written language portions of my translator app. That was dumb.

But most of Japan's transport infrastructure (road signs, train station signage, etc) is noted in English as well as Japanese. And people were very helpful. So my tour was still very manageable and enjoyable.

r e s p e c t !

I'm in total awe of that, as a trip.

I think it tells you a lot about the geography (& geology) of Japan) that you achieved those kinds of climbs, whilst mostly riding the 'coast'.

How did the Brompton hold up? Did you fly it out & back again..? Any trouble with that..?

Japan is incredibly hilly. Any navigation error that required I get "one valley over", and there were a few, would involve some hellishly steep climb.

Brompton was great. Lowered the gearing to a 34 x 13/17. The Brompton T-bag plus a really light day pack held everything for b-n-b/hotel touring. The bike fits in a suitcase for regular checked baggage flying. No problem there.

I was pretty nervous that first night, thinking "what have I got myself into..." being solo and language-poor. But it turned out amazing, really. In hindsight, Japan is a friendly, developed country. So nothing to actually worry about, given that I'd done a lot of prep work re routes and Japan knowledge, etc.

Not mine, but one that my neighbor brought home. He's an old retired guy, even older and retireder than I am, and he loves his auctions and estate sales. I was heading out to the library this afternoon and spotted a flash of orange and foil sticker in his truck bed and just knew I had to stop. A nifty little Gitane folder, probably from the '70s, and everything seems to be intact; lenses for the front and rear lights, pump, white pedals. It's all there. Note the 3-speed cluster and the groovy Huret Svelto derailleur. Haven't seen one of those in decades. Milton is a fixer-upper and a yard saler, so this bike will be cleaned up and sold. I can provide his contact info if anyone is interested. I told him not to do anything except wash and lube.

^^^Very nice! It should clean up well. The frame shape was copied my many manufactures. My Italian Cinzia is almost an exact copy. Great that it still has the little pump. Nice colour. This gives me an idea of using my Shelton dr but I would have to find a 3 speed Italian threaded FW.

okay-

here's one of mine; this is a bit of a silly picture really as you can't see anything of the bike.

It's when I was taking the long way home during a heavy week of serious-winter that we had here about a year ago; I was trying out a lighting system I was developing at the time.

Not really a 'bike' shot, but more of a cycle-culture foldup shot.

It's a Raleigh 20" Stowaway (quite heavily modified)

Looks fantastic with the bike shadowed, throwing light in front to aluminate the snowy path! Great shot.

Dunlops. I'd have expected Michelins or Hutchinsons but they are in surprisingly good shape from my cursory look.

I've found a couple of bikes from the 70's now, which although the tyres were flat, when pumped up; held-air, and could be ridden

It's incredible how long these things will last actually...

(thanks '3speed!)

Was that one of these villages losing people so that only some elderly remained? I vaguely remember stories of remaining inhabitants making figures, particularly of children, so they would not feel that lonely.
