Well, I guess I don't

Today a coworker came up to me:

Coworker: "I've heard you know a thing or two about bicycles"
Me: "Well, I guess I do"
Coworker: "What does error code 16 mean?"
Me: "......."

I figure I'll feel that way the first time I try working on indexed shifters.

Did you explain that error code 16 means that one of at least sixteen possible problems has occurred?

I would have told him (with a very straight face, and deadpan delivery) it meant his shoes were too tight.

Error 16 - Worm alert. User's e-bike has established a bluetooth link with his vape stick. Each device had a hidden a component of worm code that, when combined and executed, has hacked into his iPay account and drained it dry.

Solution - User is advised to buy an old Hawthorne and become Amish.

Indeed, and the only thing I could think of at that moment ...

The "bike" in question is a Van Moof:

For an e-bike it doesn't look too bad, IMO, and at 42 lbs it's not that heavy either. However, it takes four hours to fully charge, and you do need a phone (or watch) app to operate it.

Why does no one understand that e-bikes aren't bikes they are mopeds.

Another way to answer it:

Coworker: "I've heard you know a thing or two about bicycles"
Me: "Well, I guess I do"
Coworker: "What does error code 16 mean?"
Me: "It means the oil level in the bottom bracket converter is low"

Then watch the coworker attempt to find and oil it.

"Sell Van Moof."

Seriously, tell him to go download SmartMoof so he can get a readout of the error code.

Sounds like buying that bike was a "DumbMoof"....

Wow, my truck doesn't even have a computer. Now you have to carry a spy device just to ride your bike?

2 speed?

Two?

Real bikes don't have batteries save for lights, they don't have firmware or error codes. I am a C&V person, I do just fine with C&V hardware. Steel is real!!! In Velo Veritas!!!

I did. See above - advised that owner download SmartMoof which pulls extra data from the bike (supposedly more than the normal VanMoof app).

Van Moof does not list ANY error codes on their site (if the company is reading this, I wish you to know this is very unhelpful, you Moofers), and Google doesn't even bring up a solution to any specific error code:
https://www.google.com/search?q=vanmoof+error+16&rlz=1C1PRFI_enUS848US848&oq=van+moof+error&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l3.3170j0j4 &sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Someone on Twitter complained about Error 27 (others Error 29), and this also went on to be unhelpfully unexplained:
https://twitter.com/danielkegel/stat...458692?lang=en

And then there's the only one actual reference to error 16...and 27, 27, and 05, by a very angry client on Facebook:
Facebook Post " data-width="500" data-show-text="true" data-lazy="true">
Facebook Post " class="fb-xfbml-parse-ignore">Facebook Post

Has the owner of this ScamPoof reached out to the company yet? Sounds stupid for him to ask around unless the company has ignored him. It's like asking some carburetor guru to figure out why your Bugatti Chiron won't start.
