6 speed indexed freewheel
The title was a mouthful. Does anyone know if you can use a Shimano 6 speed indexed shifter with 6 speed freewheel not a cassette. I have no idea if the spacing is the same. Getting a bike for my daughter and she isn’t too keen on friction.

I have Schwinn six speed index shifting on my 1987 Schwinn Voyageur. DT shifter and 6 speed FW. You can check the catalogs to see what models, etc. Works fine.

If you have the shifter, then this is easy as 6 speed shimano freewheels are readily available. If you don't have the shifters, this gets tougher as you'll need to find 6 speed shifters.

6 speed Shimano freewheel and freehub (cassette) spacing is the same; 6 speed Shimano shifters will shift either one.

With the wide spacing of a 6 speed freewheel , I have never felt I needed it indexed,
I even friction shifted the AW 3 speed , I built up in 1957..

But it’s for my 24 year old daughter who as no desire to do anything but click the shifter. If it was me I prefer friction.

Are new shimano freewheels available without all that ugly *** writing on the big cog?
This is why I usually go with Sunrace, friction or not.
If buying on ebay, be sure to ask the seller what exactly the freewheel looks like before your purchase. Too often the new freewheel image does not exactly represent the item shipped.

Continuing in the spirit of the thread derail, Bah!, 6-speed, indexing, IGH etc are all for sissies. Tell her to woman up and get along with 5spd (or less) friction. Better still, Cambio Corsa or something like that to really teach her the fundamentals. But I understand if the more vintage options listed may not fit the budget.

My 1988 Miyata 512 came stock with Shimano 6 speed indexed DT shifters (SL-S434) and a 6 speed thread-on freewheel.
