The photo is as purchased and will be overhauled after I finish another in line. The only replacement component was the rear brake being Dia-Compe 986 vs the stock DX in the front. I own an extra set of each so not sure which direction I'll go for this bike. Any suggestions?

The front wheel warning sticker on the down tube has already been removed as it detracted from the paint.

That's nice, Deore DX is one of my favorites; and I like the XT/DX push push RFs. Nice score.

Around this time was when Trek killed bought Bontrager. The Race-lite had this plate; I think this may be a KB influence.

KB?

Also, the new crankset is 44-32-22, another complication.

Can someone help me date this Stumpjumper? I've estimated so far between '94-'96. Has 8 speed, SRT 800 x ray grip shifters, dia compe brake levels, Z21 wheels, and a threadless stem. Nothing I saw from archived catalogs show this color. Not sure what to do with this yet as I already have a '93 Stumpjumper... but I also bought this for $50. Not sure how successful this would be as a dropbar conversion, top tube/ seat tube measure at 58cm/48cm respectively while I normally ride 56cm road bikes.

I'm going to guess 95.

It has compact drive but no V brakes

You can have another plate made, its just AL plate with holes. You can also modify the existing plate to make the 44t fit. You can also remove it; and optionally run a 2x or 1x

Sounds like a great candidate for a conversion. Put a short stem on it (50-80mm), with an upward angle to get the bars as high as possible. Add in a long seatpost and you're golden. If the stock post isn't long enough, a cheap and high quality option is a new Control Tech Team Issue 1A.

Good ideas, thanks. Where would be a good place to look for 1x and 2x rings? It seems when companies eliminate a ring, it's always the small one, but I <3 my get-up-the-hill gear.

Maybe I could (have someone) cut the teeth off the big ring that I never, ever use?

Did that last week to my main mtb. Clamp it down, get your Dremmel out, go to town. It's easy.

New MTB double cranks are 24/34, 26/36, or 28/38 so they essentially ditch the large ring. XT and above from Shimano come in 165mm

BITD many people ground the teeth off like above to run it as a bash guard/chain retention device. The shorter chain is key for chain retention

For chainrings, I like BlackSpire, TA, raceface, sugino

I had some time to go through it and used my spare set of push pull XT M095 since I prefer the push pull action. The other less obvious change was using a long cage rear derailleur vs the stock short cage.

Agreed, 1st gen push/pull was so compact and precise compared to today's. I only like push/push because of nostalgia TBH. I do wish I had a pair of M095, I have a set of clamps that allows them to be split from the brake levers.

Interesting, I go out of my way to swap long cages for short cage.
