Campy RD with Shimano Cassette???
I am running a Shimano 11-36 10sp cassette. I have an opportunity to buy a Campy Chorus "11 speed" RD to finish my gravel bike project. Shifter is a 10sp bar end shifter, indexed, 105, I think but may be Ultegra, I don't know.
I know Campy is famously not compatible with Shimano stuff. That said, I know compatibility has more to do with matching shifters with cassettes - the RD is a brain-dead device which is governed by the shifter cable.
Thanks in advance!

Will the Campy rear der handle the 36T low gear cog?
I've mixed Ergo 9 spd levers with Shimano cassettes and either Campy or Shimano rear ders for many years. I use various ShiftMates adaptors and my stuff works very nicely. While as each addition of a cog to the count has diminished the c-c spacing differences between Campy and Shimano cassettes it also reduces the window of acceptable cable tension (before chain noise/auto shifting/jumping). So some of the answer is found in each collection of parts. How worn is the guide pulley? Of all of the lever's cable pull amount how much is actually realized at the der? Are the cogs or chain worn? I think you'll find all kinds of opinion, with most not coming from those who have seen/worked on many systems. Andy

I found the charts in this article very helpful:

might want to reference the ShiftMate tables as well: Shiftmate Compatibility Charts and Choices - Jtek Engineering --seems like the ShiftMate 4 or 5 is the right one?

I believe Campy changed the cable pull ratio of 11 speed Chorus RD in 2015 so you might need to know which version of the RD you have. But looking at Shiftmate's website I don't see anywhere where they indicate this change. That said, I also don't see any shiftmate that does the 10 speed Shimano road shifter -> 11 speed Campy RD -> 10 speed Shimano cassette. I do see where a Shiftmate 4 works for 10 speed Shimano road shifter -> Camp 10 speed RD -> 10 speed Shimano cassette. Which suggests Campy changed cable pull when they went from 10 to 11 speeds. These details do matter.
As it currently stands though the 3 bits you have are not compatible. Good luck.

There's a thread around here that can help you.
I use 10 speed Chorus shifters with a 9 speed Chorus RD to shift 10 speed Shimano.
I believe this is the only Campagnolo combination that will shift 10 speed Shimano(without shift mate). Oh, doesn't have to be Chorus, just 10 speed shifter and 9 or 8 speed derailleur.
RD is not brain dead as you say. I think the geometry and throw or something makes a difference.
Shifter/RD interaction is matched and some combinations will not work properly.
A good example is 10 speed 4700 Tiagra will only work with a 4700 RD. Part of it is the indexing of the shifter, the other part is how the RD moves in relation to the indexing.
For your application I think any 10 speed Shimano RD should work. Except for the Tigra 4700.
Campag will not work due to the difference in cable pull from shifter.

Sounds like the only way to make work is to buy a friction shifter?

No, folks have posted two ways around that in this thread - tables have been compiled to show the few limited ways you can mix and match, or you can use a Shiftmate, which is a little pulley with two different sized grooves that changes the cable pull.

I do not want to add extra work-around parts so Shiftmate products are not an option. Glad I asked around before purchasing the DR!
Thanks again!

I just put on a wheel with Campy hub and Campy-compatible 10-speed cassette on a Shimano-equipped bike. I did it as a workaround and didn't expect the shifting to work. But it works!

UPDATE - I found a Shimano Zee MTB DR to use instead. Ultra-short cage. I am excited to see how it shifts!

I was describing my Raleigh International with its 3x10 drivetrain. The rear wheel needs replacement, so I borrowed the Lemond's previous rear wheel. Shifters are 105, FD is Shimano Ultegra, RD is Shimano Sora. And for the time being, the rear hub is a Campagnolo Record (originally 9-speed) with a Miche Campagnolo-compatible 10-speed cassette. How's that for a mishmosh?

I thought the Miche cassette was Shimano spacing on Campy splines (making it "compatible")? A few iterations ago I had a Miche cassette that was the other way around (Campy spacing on Shimano hub). At any rate, Campy 10s spacing is pretty close to Shimano 10s spacing, so it probably works okay, but I'd imagine a few gears are rattley....
the pic didn't work, try it again, I wanna see!
