Gaining 4mph Without Fitness

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Now I blow by the clowns in the peloton with their dumb time trial bikes and helmets and matching jerseys. Yeah, my endurance bike just spit gravel in your face. My wife won’t even ride with me anymore because I’m miles ahead in a matter of minutes.
This could be a festive parade he was riding in. Maybe he was actually passing clowns riding clown bikes. It could be why he thinks 19 or 20 solo is really fast. Maybe the circus was in town rolling down Main .

Thanks for laying it all out in simple to follow steps. I regret that we didn't have an internet available to get training advice like this when I was younger.

Jesus. The guy posts up his step by step evolution and ascribes his gains (rightly or wrongly) to the changes and people want to kick his ass? I wonder why BF has the reputation it has?

Ok I finally stopped laughing and checked the calculation. Depending on your power and your weight, if you really had a 30lb bike, you'd be around .15 mph faster on the flats if you bought a 15lb bike.

If you went from the least aero (probably ever tested), to most aero bike (claimed), with helmet, kit, tires etc... and saved the "advertised" 5 minutes over a 40km time trial, your 17.3mph would become 18.9mph or 1.6mph faster.

So to add up all that money can buy, a 17mph rider can buy all of the "speed" money can gain him/her and maybe gain 2mph (if the ads are indeed true) on a solo 40km time trial. The irony is a solo 40km time trial would be best done on a time trial bike, and since road cyclists often ride in groups, your $12000 buys you absolutely zero while in someone else's draft.

I haven't seen any threats of violence.

For the record, fitness > equipment.

Agreed, and it's true for most hobbies (just substitute "skill" for "fitness" where appropriate). But equipment can and does play a part. I think of my other hobby: guitar playing. Yes you could put a pawn shop guitar in SRV's or Hendrix's hands and they'd still sound amazing. But I definitely have had the opposite experience where a well set-up, well built guitar has me able to pull of solos and chord changes that I can't on lesser quality, poorly set up instruments. The best guitar in the world isn't going to make me SRV. But I definitely play and sound better on my current guitars than I would if I went to the local music shop and picked up a $300 starter acoustic (which I'm sure SRV would have shredded on).

Incorrect. The only sound you'd get is that of sirens as the police close in on you for disturbing their corpses.
