Collectors may value patina on an original frameset.
Show your patina proudly - Light or moderate or heavy.
Riders who ride big mileage AND vintage bikes may value a touch of beausage.
Show your beausage proudly - Light or moderate. Spare us heavy

I have my examples but will hold back until I get a feel for where the fine line is drawn betwixt the 2 categories.

^^^^^. Would you call it heavy patina or light beausage?

Little bit of both. The top coat is fading fast but the option of repaint is not on the table.

I'll have to go through my pics to find some frame examples, but here's a saddle example. A $5 Vetta from NW Hub. Very comfortable saddle, kind of an overstuffed Turbo with both beausage & patina. Treated the leather to preserve what's left. Put it on my Fisher Montare & Liked it well enough to locate one in near new condition. New one moves from bike to bike at present. Don

Six years ago I was going to rattlecan this '71 Gitane TdF flat black. But then I saw it in the sunlight, scars, sun-faded candy-apple Omnium Vert, outlines of hardware long gone, chrome worn thin in places, but some just perfect anyway. So I daubed on a blend of Testor's model paint over the worst scrapes and built it up with a four decade span of parts where each one has a story in its own right and somehow it just came together organically like it was meant to be this bike from the very beginning. It is eerie how smooth and perfect this bike is, how what was meant to be a vacation beater has become the velo I ride more than all my other bikes combined.
I bought this B17 new in 2000. It got the scrapes and scars when a clipless pedal spontaneously released later that year and I went over the bars at 25 mph. It has graced a Bianchi, a Peugeot, a Trek and a Dawes before finally finding its true home on this Gitane.

The paint on this bike looks perfect in pictures, but the yellow panels that were once white give a hint of its true condition. It's got the best patina, without straying into decay, of any bike I own. I added the Turbo saddle, which is far too worn for a restored bike but suits this one perfectly. The bar tape could use a bit more wear.
This one also has a good bit of patina that hides from the camera.
In this case, though, I think it crosses the line into damage. A previous owner attempted touch up, but it's pretty ugly.
