The blue marble Prestige is actually kinda aqua in comparison to the very rare cobalt blue marble Ironman. This isn't even in the catalog.
Here's My '89 Ironman. It's my only Ironman built as a Road bike as opposed to a TT/ Triathlon bike.

Changes coming soon to this one.

Those apparently unopened Ironman cartons sure are tempting. Even at the somewhat high asking price it's still not a bad deal considering the price of most new comparable steel bikes.

MSRP as a reference point, from Bicycling magazine reviews / personal receipts:

85 IM - ?
86 IM - $525
87 IM E - $520
87 IM M - ?
88 IM E - ?
88 IM M - $600 (my 88 Purple Haze, bought new)
89 IM E $650
89 IM M - ?

Then consider these boxes are NOS time capsules 34-30 years later.

Yup, the original MSRP for the Ironmen was very reasonable, but still out of reach for my income back then. Adjusted for inflation that's around $1,200, I think -- roughly in the neighborhood of a new "Motobecane" or Fauxtobecane Gran Premio from Bikes Direct, although that's a good buy for a new steel bike with Ultegra for the $1,600 Gran Premio Pro.

Looks like most of those cartons contain frames for big fellas, 6' to 6'6" or so.

I want that red 54cm badly, especially if it's an '85 and I can torture @texaspandj with it.
Then I look into the living room at the nearly identical Comp TA with Superbe Pro on it, and I'm not $850 sure.

Torture Indeed!
I'd like it too, even if it is an 86.
I absolutely love my 86 Classic but the chance to own a Brand New one would be worth the swap.
My 85 will happen but right now working on changing my 89 to 9 speed.

Word. That stuff is definitely not for me, but its crazy to see it in 2019. I'm all for riding and wearing things out as intended, but those probably belong up on a wall. Or on display. Being what they are.. the last stash of them.

Like Robbie said, there are plenty of them out there already in rider condition for everybody who wants one. It seems a shame to turn these into riders after they made it all this way to '19 in boxes.

If I wanted an Ironman, I'd buy one of those, rip it out of the box, and ride it like it was meant to be.
No fun to be cooped up all these years.

If you do the math on monthly storage fees for 30 years of storage.. that is $130 for the bike and 2 bucks a month storage fees. What a bargain!

This one didn't include a box.

The box is long gone.

Someone brought up setting up the bike as a road vs. a TT bike. What would that difference be between those? Gearing? Weight of components? Is the road setup for touring/pleasure riding vs. competitive?

This is someone's version of an Ironman bike. I chuckled a bit when I saw it thinking how funny I'm gonna look on my 31 YO bike.....passing one.😀

It says "Ironman" and that's all that matters, right?

Good luck today!

Thanks it's tomorrow.
Today will be washing my bike, putting race wheels on and getting gear ready. Also sometime today I have to check in my bike to the transition area where it'll stay overnight.
My wife was nice enough to drive with me over the bike course. Coincidentally a small portion is over my training route and the race site is only 1.5 miles from my home. The last time I did a 1/2 Ironman was 6 years ago and it took several hours to get there by plane. So it should be eazy peazy.
In regards to difference in TT/Triathlon setup vs road bike. For me it's simple as road bars and aero bars also slight saddle position change.

Triathlon setup. For me triathlon and TT are the same but for some there are subtle differences and goals.

Road setup. Changes coming soon as in Brifters.
@TriBiker19 Here's a photo difference between Triathlon and road bike setup.....for the type of riding I do.

Nothing like a run in the rain with a couple thousand of your closest friends. Looks like a 10k and a full shirt?

Good luck to you!

Wife is running 10k. My daughter's HS band has their VA. marching band assessments in northern VA today. Then they play/support the runners on the MCM course tomorrow. The wife runs the 10k then helps with the band.
