I wonder how many times his chainring has shrunk over the years.

That just means more turns of the crank per mile.
OMG, has he taped together a broken steel toe clip? An inspiration, indeed; one of my lesser-used roadies still sports the same "fix".
Throw in the fact that he's still willing to work on his own bikes. That Kenda tire is probably the most "modern" thing in that shop/room.

- Missing the dust covers on the pedals.
- Has a cone wrench near the pedal (16mm???)
- Those toe straps just don't look like they're being ridden 25 miles a day.
- The front derailleur is adjusted mighty high.
- And, that rear wheel looks like it is just sitting in the dropouts.
- Is the bike in the background missing the front tire, or does it have one sewup and one clincher?
I suppose many of us have quite a few project bikes, but that photo does look a bit staged. Perhaps showing off his old bike when he is riding something entirely different.

Rear wheel is also missing a spoke, so definitely not his "daily driver". It's not unusual for news photographers to have their subjects strike fictional (not real, but close enough to relate to the article it accompanies) poses.
He's probably going to find 100 pedal caps in his post box over the next several days.

Wow. He hit a "low" of 8,000 miles in 2019. Just wow.

That is a whole lotta miles! I am thinking 100,000 is an achievement, meh. 1 million is the new standard to be measured up to.

Is that a flip-flop hub with a multi-speed freewheel?

Probably
I really should get one of those Campy Dust Cap Wrenches.
But, I don't think I'd plan on riding 100+ miles a week with the side of the pedals open.
Of course, I don't think it ever rains in England. That is part of the Sahara, isn't it (not that sand would be good either).

Sure looks like it. Would explain why he's got a QR on the front and nuts on the rear.
Also, I think the tape on the clip might be comfort-related, or to protect his shoes?

Well... I'm going to interpret the picture of him wrenching on his bike with a rosy glow no matter if it is staged or not! It is beautiful, innocent, simple and pure! Thanks very much for posting for I have been 'down' the past few days!

One million miles and 68 years cycling experience but he allows himself to be photographed riding in the big cog and big chainring combination.

It's also a waaay-aftermarket long cage RD, that, looking at the pulleys, easily handles that combo. Also, looking at how much smaller his smal chainring is, I reckon he spends most of his time on the big chainring, and just uses the full freewheel range.

I've already gotten 23K in the last couple of years, although riding a bit differently this year than last.
Unfortunately, I don't have records back into childhood.
Nonetheless, it certainly hasn't been high mileage every year, so I could well have done half of my lifetime mileage in these last few years.

It’s been my observation that if you’re actually using the bike for transportation the miles accumulate fairly quickly ..

If I am not mistaken, there is also a good bit of tape holding the saddle together on the white Holdsworth.
Less fussing, more riding!
