As the season winds down, I've been riding into the city to do some exploring. Chicago has gotten a lot better with bike lanes and there are some new paths to connect more neighborhoods. Additionally, I moved last year and my new location gives me a better "angle" to get to the lake front path (much less traffic and sketch).
Today, I decided to ride to The 606, an elevated trail similar to the High Line in NYC.
On the way out, I stopped in Oz Park which has sculptures of the the characters from the Wizard of Oz. It was 40 degrees out with a windchill in the low 30s - colder than a tinman's arse!
I passed through the vacancy left by the former Finkl & sons steel mill. Withs views of downtown and Proximity to Lincoln Park, this land is slated for 10 billion in development over the next decade.
On the edge of the property is the Cortland Street draw bridge, built in 1902.
Finally made it to The 606. First time for me and it's pretty nice. Rode the whole 3-mile length. Still feels new, since it was built in 2015.
They left parts of the old railway bridges, which makes for a good photo op.
Spotted a old water tank. They used to be everywhere, but most have
,sometimes in a spectacular fashion.
Armitage CTA stop.
Low clouds over downtown, the lake level is fairly high. Snow (up to 8 inches) tonight and temps in the teens next week...

I got my '78 Raleigh Super Course out for a 47 mile run down PCH to Malibu with our Moorpark Ride Group. Little chilly and windy at the start, but a nice tail wind home. Two vintage steels on the ride, my Raleigh, a $20 CL find, and Rick's beautiful De Rosa, which was way more than $20. Pretty bike!
Re-group at Magu Rock.
My old Raleigh at Neptune's Net stop.
Rick's pretty De Rosa.

Council Crest in the fog. I'd post an artsy shot, but I'm new and can't post pics yet.

Mid 60’s temps here today so got out for what might be the last warm day for a while. Also got some fall colors finally showing up. While we’re visualizing pictures in our mind, imagine the sparkled colors of the Blue Ridge behind the top rail of that fence. Next time I’ll look at the picture before putting the phone back in my pocket. Grapevines in the foreground, it was quite a wonderful sight!
I wore my Fly Navy jersey for Veterans Day and an old Marine waved me down to chat. It wasn’t planned, but realized I must have unconsciously picked the blue and gold bike for the day as well.

Yes I feel very blessed to live where I do and get this kind of view on a pleasant day, I try not to take it for granted and I am pretty sure I will be priced out of this city before too long. If it helps its grey and raining today

I was down south in the Westlake Village/Agoura area (north of L.A.) visiting family this weekend. I brought my De Rosa this time. It's always a pleasure to hit some of the roads I used to ride when I was teenager bit by the cycling bug.
DAY 1
Riding through Hidden Valley. Rich farm estates on the outer edge of suburbia (and a popular site for car commercials).
View from the far end of Hidden Valley looking east back toward Westlake Village.
Lake Sherwood
DAY 2
Ascent up Decker. Hard to tell from this angle, especially with the sun in your eyes, but this is a nasty, steep little section, and pretty treacherous coming downhill.
View from atop the ridge, looking west toward the Pacific Ocean (covered in white fog).
Lesson: Don't believe everything you read. This photo is at the top of "the Rock Store climb" on Mulholland Drive. It's been closed after some recent fires, but it's open to cyclists willing to lift their bikes over a couple small fences. There was too much gravel on the road to let it rip on the descent, but at least there were zeros cars.
A view looking down the descent (notice the twisting road in the distance below).
And a shot of the Rock Store, a popular biker hangout.
Finished off with a nice little gravel shortcut back home.

Trying to take advantage of even partially sunny days here in November while I am in between gigs. Took a ride on the Snoqualmie Valley trail after seeing @northbend suggest it for a PNW group ride. I have done a lot of trails in the greater Seattle metro area but never the SVT before this fall. I was grateful for the ride:
The trail was damp but not muddy
The day was cool but not cold -I was ok with a lightweight wool sweater
It was cloudy but no rain and I got a sun break at the mid point of the ride.
start in Carnation WA
Sun break!
I guess I will turn around here...
lovely bucolic scenery like this most of the way

Had big plans for ridding my age today.
Monday's weather made a mess of things so I changed my route.
Put a bike on the trainer, in my basement. Yuck!
Found out I'm the same age as another cyclist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Hinault

@rhm and I rode a 200K permanent yesterday that started at a Dunkin in the Riverdale section of the North Bronx. The temperature hovered just under freezing as we left but it wasn't too uncomfortable. He arrived via public transportation at 6AM and I rode the five miles to meet him. We headed out due north through urban Yonkers to the Rail Trail and more or less follwed that to our second control in Carmel, NY (45ish miles). We had what turned out to be a very good bagel and coffee breakfast at Carmel Bagels. It seemed to be the meeting spot for a bunch of retired folk who were chatting and having a grand time. We then headed west through Fahnstock State Park, and south to Cold Spring where we had a quick lunch then down to and over the Bear Mountain Bridge to Rockland County, NY and south to the GW Bridge and back to NYC. The route was terrific and scenic with plenty of climbing and quality choices for food and fuel along the route. The temps also reached the 50's by afternoon and the sun was shining, albeit with some wind, but overall the weather was ideal. This was definitely one of the better 200K routes I have ridden. I was home by 1820 hours, fatigued, hungry and satisfied after an excellent ride which ended up just over 134 miles and 7K+ feet of climbing. I wish I had taken more photos.

That's a fine day in the saddle especially for this time of the year, Greg. It is surprising to me not being familiar with the riding in that part of the world how rural it gets so soon outside of the New York City. That's cool.

After last Monday's 4-inch snowfall, the temps finally got into the mid-30s. My wife decided today was the day to get back on her bike after a 6-year layoff. We decided to bundle up and make a run for bagels.
Roads and trails were mostly dry, but there's still some snow hanging around.
My wife with her "new" bike which she got on CL for $40. It's a Specialized World and is pretty decent. Fits her better and she likes the upright position vs. her old Trek hybrid.
I was on my "foul weather" bike, a BD Kilo TT single speed.
We got to the bagel place in good style. It's open 24/7 and the stuff is always fresh.
Had to stop for the Skokie "Swift" on the way home.
Got 1/2 dozen bagels and a Danish, which we enjoyed with coffee when we got home. Overall, only about 6 miles of riding, but good to see my wife back on a bike. Hoping the warmer temps this week get rid of the snow.

Dry, dry, dry here in parched California. The last meaningful rain in my corner of the world was in May. On Thursday it drizzled a just little bit so I hopped on my bike to celebrate with a bike ride. Not enough rain to wet the ground, but enough to bring out the smells hidden in the long-dry foliage.
My little local meander ties together about 12 miles of short dirt trails with about 7 miles of pavement. Everything from deep forest to grasslands to the marsh lands of Tomales Bay.
A dirty bike is a happy bike.

Did a 48-miler up to Lake Forest. Didn't think I'd get a ride in given last week's snow and rain/snow predicted for today. Fortunately, they pushed the precipitation off to late afternoon. Temps in the upper 30s.
Still a lot of snow on the ground, but the roads were mostly clear. Quite a few other riders were out. Very gray and you can feel the wx rolling in.
Bike in the Glencoe train station. Stopped in after discovering the Highland Park station was locked. Tapped a kidney and refilled the water.
This was the only other photo I took. The cold killed the phone. I was able to bring it back to life by heating it under the hand dryer in the station, but it wouldn't work outside.
As a bonus, the rear tire started to go down in the last 5 miles, but I was able to "sponge" my way home.

I've had few opportunities this year to do any rides other than commuting. However today I did get out on the Masi. 45.66 miles. Temperature only 28degF when I started, about 40degF when I returned home. Saw at least one hawk, probably a red tail, one red-bellied woodpecker, more than a few dozen snowflakes, few other cyclists.
Over in the 50+ they have this thing they call a birthday ride. I turned 71 on Friday. I don't usually have enough hours of daylight to do 71 miles so I settled for 73km.
The usual haunts were deserted.

You winter riders are tough! It was gray skies, 42 degrees but I managed to bundle up and hop on the Bianchi for a few loops around town. No pics today! Average high temps around here this time of year are usually mid to low 50's. I haven't yet developed my "ride at all costs" winter desperation although I did get a little cabin fever today.
Here's a picture of an alpaca instead.
