I must be getting old or something, cuz the cold starts bothering me more than it used to! Or maybe I was just coming down with a cold the other day (I was, and I'm still fighting it off... successfully so far). But whatever. It was one of those rides where I wanted either the thick gloves or the thin gloves. I tried "no gloves" for a while, but found it too cold for that.

So that's my excuse for no photos of my own. But it also gives you some idea of the day. Beautiful! But cold.

The photo I've picked was one I would have taken. Zoom in! At the lower left corner you see the shadow of the Bear Mountain bridge. And along the far bank of the Hudson, you see a freight train. You can trace that train all the way from the left edge of the photo to the right edge. Had Greg had a wide angle lens on his phone, you'd still see that train span the picture frame. It was miles long, and --even miles away-- you couldn't see either end of it.

It really was a good route. We crossed the Hudson twice, both times on bridges that were, at the time of their construction, the longest suspension bridge ever built.

200 km is a pretty long way to ride, and you see a whole lot of cool stuff. Critters, lakes, ****wit drivers, mountains, moments of inexplicable magic. You had to be there.

There are things to dislike about these low-30s clear-weather mornings, but the low patchy fog they produce is beautiful.

Got out on the Pinarello Record on the Blue Ridge Parkway today. While this is a nice getaway from the heat in summer, makes for chilly riding this time of year as it’s usually 10 degrees colder than the valley. This is about a quarter mile from my turnaround at Ravens Roost, pictured elsewhere in this thread. Looking westward over the Shenandoah Valley and the GW National Forest off in the distance. I still can’t figure out why some pics load 90 degrees rotated. Don’t know how to fix.

I just rode my commute today, and a small part of it yesterday.

Yesterday I started out, felt the bike slip a bit after a few blocks, saw one person knocking ice off his car windows, saw more suspicious road surface, turned around after maybe 3/4 mile. Walked in the door and heard my sweetie say she was glad I came back then. So I grabbed some car keys (the Porsche, can you blame me?) and drove in, heard lots of black ice reports on the radio (which is what had prompted my sweetie to start worrying).

Today's commute was on wet roads but no direct rain this morning, so the bike got filthy but I didn't get wet. The weather was supposed to clear for the afternoon, but it turned out to be raining until I got halfway home. So I got wet and the bike got filthy again. Great fun!

I did see a nice sunset.

Scouted the San Rafael bridge for a group ride. Rode from Richmond Craneway Pavilion to Trips for Kids in downtown San Rafael.

Management gave us the afternoon off from work to celebrate an important product release. The weather was perfect, so I headed to Forest Grove and did a loop around Hagg Lake. On a chilly weekday November afternoon I just about had the lake to myself. In 10 miles I saw five cars and three other bikes -- a bit more traffic getting there and back but still not much on the rural roads.

@curbtender - that looks like a cool ride. How far across? If I remember right, there’s a bike lane on the Bay Bridge now, so that would beg a lap of SF Bay across the 3 bridges.

Sunny and low 40's here; a break from the rain and high forties, so a general improvement. Blue Mountain Road, west of town, I got in about 20 miles and lots of climbing.

Historic registry Blue Mountain schoolhouse. Must be the oldest standing such structure in the area; has a graveyard out back with markers going back 120 years; pretty old for out here.


I was surprised the first time I visited this place back in the late 70's that they leave the front door unlocked. Turns out they still do!



Autumn mist as the sun goes down across the road from there. Cools down fast.

I had a weird bike commuting week. Had a rear flat on Monday, but I was only 3/4 mile from home, so no big deal to walk the rest of the way. Then, on Wed, some one stole my helmet while my bike was parked outside of a busy transit station adjoining campus. Just my helmet! I suppose I should feel good about the person now with head protection? A colleague suggested I alert campus police to look out for anyone wearing a white Giro bike helmet. Hmm.

Sign says, from the entrance, 4.3 miles to pt San Quentin. The Bay Bridge only goes to Treasure Island so you need to shuttle the rest of the way. I hear that you can arrange a water taxi if you plan ahead. Plans in the making for parking at pt Richmond to the Richmond ferry. That takes you to the ferry terminal in SF. From there you have a lot of options for different mileage back around and over the bridge. A straight shot is a little over 30 miles with a ride through the Embarcadero, Crissy Field, Golden Gate bridge, Sausalito and back through Larkspur. They are finishing the Smart train station in Larkspur if you wanted to go further north and take it back.

Tucson, AZ! This past weekend was El Tour de Tucson and I met up with these knuckleheads (John Siemsen from Portland on his SS Bilenky, and Scott Calhoun on his MAP):



To ride the 108 mile route. Low 40's to start, 70 at the finish. Oy. Also note the 'wet' dry wash above, the only dry wash I've ever encountered on a Century ride. Only had to carry the bike about 100 yards.

Finally, the snow melted so I was able to go out on the road with the new bike. Still salty and some icy spots, so I did my normal hilly "shakeout" route that keeps me within walking distance of my house.

Snuck out between the "Thanksgiving Storms" to do a quick 30-miler down to Lincoln Park Zoo. Only had to worry about 45 mph wind gusts coming out of the west on the wrap-around from the storm.



Almost all the leaves are down and everything has turned brown. Lots of sticks and small branches on the path from the wind.



Once again, my camera quit because of the cold. I was able to revive it using the warm air from the hand dryer at the zoo restroom.

Bringing Home the Cheese

I live in the dairy country of West Marin, home to several small artisan cheese makers, so it falls on me to bring a cheese plate for our family Thanksgiving gathering.
A perfect excuse for a circuitous ride through the local countryside!

First stop is the smallest of these operations, the Nicasio Valley Cheese Company:




Now you know why I have that big bikepacking saddlebag...It's the cheese!
Their selection is small but delicious.




Next stop, the oldest of the local cheesemakers, the Marin French Cheese Company. Sorry, no photo of the cheese counter: Too many eager cheese buyers in the way to get a decent photo.




Finally, back to Point Reyes Station to Tomales Bay Foods, home of the Cowgirl Creamery.
