Reduced carbon buttprint
I want Greta Thunberg and the American people to know that in the interest of saving the planet and limiting my carbon buttprint, I drove my car fewer miles this year—my 68th—than I rode my bike.

On average I ride 4,000/year myself. However...I also drive my truck about 20,000 miles a year. No way I'm doing that on a bike.

As a manufacturing supervisor, one of my employees on 3rd shift was caught 'sitting' on a copier making buttprints.
It was before we worried about carbon, and if he had been copying his footprint, the whole incident would not have caused such a stink.

Kids today have it easy. When I was young and impish I had to use a mimeograph machine. Every try to get that purple ink out of your skin? And that chemical smell! Egads!

For me, annually about 6000-7000 miles bike commuting and 3000 miles of recreational riding. And about 5,000 miles in the car (almost all recreational, most of it driving to remote bike rides and skiing).

Very interesting thought experiment. I honestly hadn't thought of looking at it that way. Looking back, I put about 3,000 miles a year on my bike and drive the car about the same distance. However, this year we took an epic vacation which involved flying to and sailing around the British Virgin Islands for a week. Despite the use of sail power, I'm pretty sure that the airplane ride eclipsed all of my other activities for carbon output. I did buy carbon offsets, but I feel that's weak sauce in terms of fighting global warming.

Thats great. When I retire in a few years, I can think about it, but with my long commute, I'm about 10x more car than bike. Don't tell Greta.

Remember: as you maintain fitness you usually increase life span which, again, means you consume more of the global resources! So... if you want to reduce your carbon 'footprint' then live fast and die young!!! For me??? I plan to live a l-o-n-g time and be a 'user' and 'consumer' of as much as I can!

We walk 18 holes of golf 5 days a week vs using a riding cart. However I drive the 12 miles round trip in my car. I need to do the CO2 reduction on both of those. Maybe I need to leave my clubs at the course and commute to the course by bike??? Since retiring my annual vehicle mileage has gone from 20k to 3k......except for driving across the US for bike trips!

Most miles that people drive are commute miles. My wife and I long ago made a decision to always live close to work to avoid both stress on our lives and ecological destruction. This has become more important as the climate crisis has gone from being an unclear and far-off theory to an accelerating disaster with obvious and far reaching effects. I usually ride my bike the 2 miles to work and we use our cars primarily for long distance travel, which has the desired effects and also saves a ton of money on gas, insurance and car maintenance. Win, win, win.

I for one don't keep track of my carbon butt/foot print. I'll change the way I look at carbon or CO2 when the OP that fly around the world in private jets and live in mansions follow their own advice/rules/laws. The small town or county I live in puts out less pollution than the trips OP take to the Paris Climate Summit. I actually enjoy riding a bike down the country lane, huffing and puffing aspiring more co2 than someone else sitting in their recliner watching TV.
