Can anyone tell me how these are supposed to work? I am not familiar with the markings on the adjustment, nor SunTour in general.

Anyone know what model these are? They are driving an XC 9000 RD if that helps any.

Its been a while but I believe the RE is for 6 spd and the UL is for 7 spd.

Why do I always find the answer after posting? I did an exhaustive search beforehand with no luck. I changed my Google search slightly and BAM!! I found this PDF in my search finds:

Page 10 outlines what each marking means, but here it is for the short answer: The UL is for ULTRA-7 index cassette. These are narrow spaced. The RE is for standard spaced Winner Systems, 6 speed. The P is for non-indexed friction shifting, regardless of the cassette. I have attached the document for those who may have the same technical questions as I did. Suntour is pretty finicky it seems on what will and what won't work with each other.

Yep, you are very correct! Thanks! What is interesting is I am glad I asked. Mine is set on UL and I have the Winner Pro 6 speed. So mine needs to be set on RE. I was counting the shifts on this and got "7" when I operated it. So, knowing I had a 6 speed cassette, I was a bit puzzled at that. Now, I know the problem. Funny, it shifted pretty well in the wrong position....

I thought “UL” would stand for “unbelievably lucky” if you got it to index properly.

Hence, Suntour is out of the business, put there aptly by Shimano.

Yeah because shimano had all that fishing reel money to throw into bicycle R&D after they got to use the Slant parallelogram design, and I believe Suntour even developed indexing first

Back in the day, you would be correct about the Suntour, but they finally got it right. The Suntour system actually worked quite well using the spaces designed for it's system. I currently use it but do not have the supporting boards that make it work well I always thought the Suntour rear cog system was quite nice. Smiles, MH

Let us know how it works once you get it switched. I made the mistake of buying accushift plus instead of accushift and drove myself crazy trying to get it to work. It kind of worked but it was not great. Once I got accushift shifters, it worked great.

That sounds great. Lots of great road rides around here. I grew up in Louisville and always love to ride up there, too. Health issues (and some laziness before the health issues kicked in) kept me largely off the bike this year but I have plans for 2020.

Make sure you keep us up to date on the build. I am curious to see what tires you go with. Are you going to convert to 700c?

I will keep it updated. I purchased some Schwalbe Marathons in the OEM 27. I actually hate to swap these out as these OEM Wobler 58 Super Champion rims have an excellent reputation and they are 40/36 hole. I may buy a set of extra tires and stash them away.

Wise choice, IMHO. Those Cantis are going to be much easier to use with the original rim size. Gorgeous bike!
