Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As far as calories out, there are plenty of activity trackers and smartwatches that are up to the task.

The problem is that the people that should be paying attention to both sides of the equation often think that one or the other is enough.
Understood. Looks like an initial main effort and then just maintenance. Like a lot of things in life. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions for the apps, too.

If I start going down this road I'll likely just start out with the standard BMR you can calculate. I would hope that they are reasonably accurate, even if they are ± ~30% it's at least a starting point. I desperately want to avoid getting a smart watch or activity tracker.

Clearly having some misplaced anger problems this week. Don't know if it's the concussion, the trauma, or just the facts of the case.

My wife would really like to move somewhere in the Southeast US.

After 30 Illinois winters she's a bit fed up with them.

Any suggestions?

Lived in morehead city/ new bern north carolina. Beautiful small town on the water, and access to the southern part of the obx. I would move back there in a heart beat if it wasn’t so hard for me to get to work from there.

I don't know what sight reading is. Reading by sight. Duh. But then why do we have to say it at all? To hear our own voice no doubt.

Per Wikipedia:

"Sight-reading, also called a prima vista (Italian meaning "at first sight"), is the reading and performing of a piece of music or song in music notation that the performer has not seen before."

I have found that when I leave the ball bat home, it keeps me out of trouble. Of course, in your case, maybe just locking the office door would be best. Human interaction may not be the best right now.

Good advice. I should also probably let all email cool for 30 min before sending.

Of course, I might just be an irritable old man. \

My wife and I thought about the SE, too, but decided to stay where we are. While the SE has some nice weather, they have some schizoid weather, too, like rain and storms and summer humidity’s that makes Illinois humidity look like the Sahara. And, don’t forget the traffic.

Then again, escaping Illinois taxes and state debt may make any change of location worthwhile.

Watched this fascinating documentary on PBS last night about the struggle to regulate the food industry, beginning in the late 1800’s. The methods employed by the industry at that time were nothing short of criminal, and the resistance the pioneering Dr. Wiley faced looks exactly like the resistance populist movements face today . . . shameful and criminal.
