If you've never counted calories, I would recommend doing it for at least a few weeks to get a real handle on it. Nothing like actually writing down what you eat to make you realize what things are blowing your budget, etc. Any of the free apps like myfintesspal or loseit are a good start. Once you do it for a while, you get a pretty good handle on what a deficit looks like and how to maintain it. Not that I have the discipline to do so (obviously) but once you do it long enough, there is no lying to yourself about exactly how many calories are in that donut/slice of pizza.
See my post above about tracking home cooking. Easy with the right app.
As far as calories out, there are plenty of activity trackers and smartwatches that are up to the task.
The problem is that the people that should be paying attention to both sides of the equation often think that one or the other is enough.

If I start going down this road I'll likely just start out with the standard BMR you can calculate. I would hope that they are reasonably accurate, even if they are ± ~30% it's at least a starting point. I desperately want to avoid getting a smart watch or activity tracker.

Lived in morehead city/ new bern north carolina. Beautiful small town on the water, and access to the southern part of the obx. I would move back there in a heart beat if it wasn’t so hard for me to get to work from there.

I have found that when I leave the ball bat home, it keeps me out of trouble. Of course, in your case, maybe just locking the office door would be best. Human interaction may not be the best right now.

Watched this fascinating documentary on PBS last night about the struggle to regulate the food industry, beginning in the late 1800’s. The methods employed by the industry at that time were nothing short of criminal, and the resistance the pioneering Dr. Wiley faced looks exactly like the resistance populist movements face today . . . shameful and criminal.

My wife and I thought about the SE, too, but decided to stay where we are. While the SE has some nice weather, they have some schizoid weather, too, like rain and storms and summer humidity’s that makes Illinois humidity look like the Sahara. And, don’t forget the traffic.
