So what I mean to ask is: if the problem is real, and the improvement is all in your head, then is the solution bogus or real?
The point of the word/concept isn't to capture as much as possible under a large umbrella. Chindogu are in fact, usually gags, much like a Rube Goldberg machine, except Rube Goldberg machines specifically emphasize needless complexity in performing a simple task. Both rely on the absurdity of an unhelpful solution to a problem that only solves the problem on technical grounds, but fail in actually being helpful, useful or practical. It is not an invention that was meant to do something else, but happens to fulfill some other purpose like being a placebo. It is not a thing that was designed to work as a placebo that actually works as a placebo. It is an invention that does exactly what it says it will do on the label, it technically solves the problem as advertised, but is generally impractical or undesirable for some other reason.

I nominate the NuVinci continuously variable transmission hub, because it's ridiculous and unnecessary, but also admirable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NuVinc...e_Transmission

Sorry this one is on an e-moped instead of a mountain bike, but they were originally made for mountain and touring bikes.

Bicycle chains, dagnabbit! Expensive, complicated devices that don't provide any appreciable advantage over my high-wheeler!

Ah but again, Biopace is a useful thing for a lot of people with even the Late Great Sheldon Brown liking it.

I have never heard the term chindogu before but if I got it right a Campagnolo Cambio Corsa is a good example.

my point is i disagree that a cable cozy is an example of an unuseless invention. I've ridden bikes with concealed cables of all sorts, and the worst ones are those like in your second photo. I have had low-grade arthritis in my hands since my late 20s, and if there's not some sort of smooth transition on the bars my hands know it pretty quickly. They complain loudly about it, too! Bars with creases help, and so do cable-cozys - so for this guy at least.

I'm not going to weigh in on the definition or interpretation of the chindogu term, but I encourage you to do a google image search if you need a quick laugh. Shoe umbrellas, baby onesie mops, soup splash guards -- it's inspired overdesigned tomfoolery.

It has been quite windy here for the past few weeks (the winds actually had names), and I've been thinking of getting one of these, as my Zippo just ain't cutting it:

What are you supposed to do with the plug at the end of the cable?
