I've been slacking...

...but my workbench is basically done and cleared and tools put away. Not totally bike related but I can get back to bikes though. Right side is basically the hand tool side, left side is bike, wood, and measurement tool side.

Love your bench! Mine are pretty much done...what I am looking forward to now is clearing my window area to let in natural light, heat, and fresh air when the weather allows...

Bringing a frame back to life. I robbed it of components to build the LeMond TSX frame. It is too nice a frame to not be on the road.

Thanks all. It's in a great spot for light for most of the day. It's sort of South-southeast so lots of sun all day. It's in a cool little workshop room off the side of the garage. 6.5' by 22' I think. Odd space but good to tinker with.

My wife and I moved into our first apartment in November, and I've been working on my "office space" in the second bedroom. I finally have a bicycle in here and have been tinkering away this past week... It's almost ready to roll! 'Tis my uncle's 1972 Raleigh Professional that he rode regularly at least into the late 1980s, and the only original component is the Campagnolo Record headset. Even the fork is from a Raleigh International and was replaced after he had a front end collision... Fun stuff.

Awesome job!

The more I see workbenches with tool cabinets built in, the more I need to do this. If I don't sell my house this next year, perhaps I will upgrade my tool storage and rebuild my existing 8' workbench.

I thought our rains were over so I decided to build my replacement Winter beater and "retire" the other one (Rockhopper with drops) after two seasons of rainy rides. It will also double as a gravel so I have the gravel tires on. Started transfering parts over today and will probably finish it on Thursday.
Then I see rain is in the forecast for next week.

Polishing silver aluminum rims

Spent a few minutes lightly cleaning the rear rim on a wheelset getting new tires. BlueMagic between spokes, just alcohol for braking surface. It is better than the front now, and most importantly = no cracks.

How much time time do you spend cleaning a rim, mostly for cosmetic appearance?

These rims were not in terrible shape to begin with, and will ‘dull-out’ pretty fast in a Seattle Spring. Also had forgotten they are Legnano branded hubs.

Quite a bit of work when I first acquire them. I use wd-40, paper towels, scotch-brite pads, and 800 grit paper under a dripping faucet. Probably as much time is spent on appearance as truing/dish. After they're put in use, I forget appearances ... unless I get caught in the rain.

Hope they're working for you. Hubs are Ofmega, I believe.

I had a chance to pick one of these up a few years back. I was a volunteer at the local coop. It was my size and in perfect condition. I was the one who fixed it up and got it ready for retail sales too! At the time "I didn't have a use for a 26" wheeled bike"....How I kick myself for such thoughts. Its always the ones I didn't buy I remember the most. Hope you enjoy it!

Truing the the crummy Velo Mine wheel for the forth or fifth time.

Back story - brand new wheel went out of whack after 100 miles. Not happy, but chalked it up to poor tensioning by VM.

Then it started happening every 100 miles. When I checked, one spoke would be slack. After the 3rd time I marked the spoke and it was the same one.

Basically, they sent me a wheel with a stripped nipple. Replaced the nipple and see what happens. Done with Velo Mine forever.

Well, mostly success. The drive side came out fine, but the other pin deformed a bit before popping loose. I saved it by knocking it back in line, rethreading the post to 7x1mm, and then tapping a nut to match.

Here's the spindle.

Note the lack of wear! The bottom bracket area inside was like new, just old hard grease. It's all back together and ready to go.
What is that tool you used to remove the cottered pin with? Is that a tool specifically made for the cotter pin? Something you came up with yourself? Cnc machine? I've only removed one cottered crankset and it involved a hammer and a strategically placed brick. I got it removed but the plan was never to reinstall. Thankfully I didn't need to worry about the end condition.

OMG, if I cried in my beer for every time I missed a deal, or passed on a deal, or dragged my feet on a deal, I'd probably slice my wrists. I dragged my feets (and missed it) on a deal for one of Sheldon Brown's personal bikes, and it hurts every time I think of it. I've been collecting worthy MTB frames for a while now, and the High Sierras remain somewhat elusive. I traded a couple old post-war Columbias for this one. I rather think I took a beating on the deal, but ultimately this Schwinn will be a prize when I'm done with it.

Nothing, my stuff is all immaculate. Side effect of a bunch of time off the bikes (surgery then weather).

I did spy a really small Bianchi at a pawn shop today. I need to measure it but I think it's a good candidate for my wife. She is 4'10" so it still may be too big.

It's a fully lugged frame, aero brake levers, 7 speed, downtube shifters, and those Matrix rims Trek used to have. The Celeste bar tape is even in pretty good shape. If it's 48cm or smaller, I'll probably jump on it.

Ever thought of a sledgehammer as a bike tool?

It's really quite great for loosening a freewheel by hitting the end of your adjustable wrench attached to the freewheel tool. I love that feeling on that fourth of fifth strike when the wrench doesn't just clunk unwillingly but spins around. Ahhh ... success.
