Question about bicycle cassette

HI,

I bought an Shimano HG-50 8 speed cassette.

When fitted, I could see that it did not seem to be exactly true.

For example, if I turn it backwards with my fingers and use a spoke as a reference point, it deviates by at least 1mm

I took everything apart and tightened up the free-hub.

The free-hub run perfectly true.

It was still the same when reassembled.

So I sent off for another HG-50 ( intending to send the defective one back).

The newest HG-50 was the same.

When I try I put on another new cassette ( an HG model but very old stock) it runs true ( it is a 7 speed with a spacer).

Does anyone have any helpful input.

Thank you

It seems like I used to have some 1mm or 1/2mm spacers around from some cassette applications. See if you can find one of those and try putting it behind your cassette. My bet is that'll fix your problem.

HI,
Thanks for the reply.
The old cassette was perfectly true as is the 7 speed with spacer,

But the two new HG50s, bought from different stores, are not.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

The cassette is not loose at all; it fits perfectly but , as I said, seems to show a buckle.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.
I knew that freewheels often showed unevenness, due to sightly off-centre threads on the wheel, but I have never noticed it on cassettes before; I just must have been lucky.

Are you certain it's not just the various shift ramps on the cogs that give the illusion that it's not true? Perhaps the old 7sp cassette did not have very prominent shift ramps (if at all)?

Have you confirmed that the area where the wheel is mounted is true in line with the frame?

HI,

Yes, I thought that too.

So I used a magic marker on the rear part of the large cog as I turned it; it is like a buckled wheel ; marker on about a third of the cog , thin to thick to thin.

I tried the inner part of the large cog too; the marker shows on only one point ( four adjacent teeth) ; there are 4 separate ramped sections; so it is not the ramps.

Thanks

Put it all together and ride it. Then you'll know for sure if it's an issue. Some will move more than what we'd imagine is acceptable. In actual use it likely isn't an issue for something that doesn't turn very fast.

I had this issue once with a 9sp cassette. The cassette was not seated properly against the rear surface of the free hub. I removed it and re-fitted it a couple of times and the wiggle went away. But I am sure you have tried this by now.

Did you, for some reason, disassemble the cassette? I modify my cassettes ( I remove the second position 14T on a 13-25T and add a 28T at the rear) and sometimes in reassembly the plastic spacers don't sit correctly and mess up the spacing of the cassette cogs.

Good luck.
