I'm having a hard time visualizing how the fenders are interfering at the chain stays. Are you running the full width of the fender in between the chain stays? I've got SKS fenders for this bike and assumed I would be notching them for the chain stays. I've been pondering the 33mm tires, but don't want to give up the cush.

Yeah, you'll be fine with 33mm. Tomorrow I can take a picture of my raleigh for you to get a better look at how 35mm might work with fenders.

I went ahead and ordered 33mm panaracer gravel king ext's. The seller raised the price 120% while they were in my "cart". But agreed to sell at the original discount. They have decided that the supply chain is drying up for the foresee able future. Just something to think about.

I know you already purchased 33mm tires, but just in case someone else needs this information in the future...Raleigh Super Course Mk II (dropouts spread to 130mm), 700x35mm tire clearance.
There's about 7mm of clearance from the chainstay to the tire on either side, and about 1 inch of clearance from the top of the tire to the chainstay bridge. The wheel is positioned roughly midway up in the dropouts.

Sheesh, there's zero clearance for anything larger than 700x25c on Raleigh USA (Japanese and Taiwanese) Super Courses. But these were setup for 700c.

Are you sure you have a 1972? On my 1973, I have Capella lugs - different from the Nervex on the 1972. What I have found so far is that 1973 would be the 1st year Raleigh used Capella lugs on the SC. The Raleigh decal is also different. 1973 was the first year with the 'Raleigh' using more 'square' letters.

The collective wisdom on Raleighs here on BF is that they used Capella lugs only in 1973. And yes, that was also the first year with the slanted block letters which is also the case with many other models.

I've made a few changes to my '73, with possibly another change coming soon. It's hilly here, and I have a MTB here that I never ride. But I love riding the Raleigh. So, I went ahead and triplized it, adding a new cartridge bottom bracket and alloy seatpost. 3x7 indexed now. I also shelved the B17 Narrow saddle, as it is a bit too narrow for me. So far I've shaved about 1.5 pounds off. Everything shifts great out in the street here, and I can't wait for a real ride.
