Put together a route which took me a lot further out from the house and on roads I hadn’t ridden before. A coolish and cloudy day but I loved the route and the area. 107 miles with 5700’ of climbing. I had a couple of detours. One was for a road that was closed. The second one was to route around a dirt road which I’d assume was paved. Ride with GPS can be very helpful with developing routes. It’s nice not to have to follow cue sheets.
My route called for turning onto this gravel road. Figured out a detour.
Today’s route included a portion of the Southern Uwharrie Bike Route.
Crossing the Rocky River but the water was up and covering the rocks.
A very small community.
This is why it’s called Vottonville.
The most unusual mail post I’ve seen out riding. Wonder if these are available via Amazon???

I did my first 25 mile ride in over a year today. As Mom's health deteriorated, I spent more and more time at home taking care of her.
That ended on April 8th, when Mom quietly drew her last breath. Since then I've been trying to sort out the many things that need dealt with, and today I just felt the need to get out of the house, so I hopped on the bike and rode 25 miles, going to the chain of rocks bridge and back. With the pandemic, I thought it would be less crowded, but it was quite popular... and crowded.
After I got back, my legs felt like rubber bands that were wound too tight. Now they feel like limp overcooked noodles.

First recreational road ride in a long while yesterday, and it was rough. Terrific headwind and too cold, but it was my endurance and power that were really off. When the front shifter malfunctioned and wouldn't pull the cable to shift to the big ring, I decided to call it a day and just spin home. Fortunately the shifter problem was just dried up lube messing with the Shimano ratchet mechanism and a little WD-40 cleared it right up.
Good to be back in the saddle again.

I beat myself up pretty good doing lots of neglected yard work, but around 5:00 PM I did take an hour ride up Weakley Hollow and back. Bluster, but Brilliant sunshine.
Only 15 miles, but they’re hard ones in the hills of VA Mtns! The compact gearing of the Giant and stiff frame really helps.

David Bierbaum,
Sorry about your Mom, hang in there. Glad you're back on the bike, getting out, sweating a bit and re-engaging another part of your brain. It's an important step on the way back even keel. Good luck.

Yesterday 6 of us went on a 71-miler, 2200 feet of climbing and an average of 18.7 mph. The oldest person in the photo below is 79. Tomorrow an 80 plus mile loop to a National Park, with probably just two others. It's getting hot here in Tucson, the snowbirds are leaving, and even full-timers are looking at shorter rides to beat our current daily highs near 100.

Shortish ride in a really long time. Only 15 miles. I’d planned to ride around 50 miles but quickly adjusted. Within the first couple of miles I just didn’t feel like making the necessary effort to ride at a normal pace. So just did some slow sightseeing through various subdivisions near where I live. It sure put a hurting into my average ride of 60+ miles but you just have to listen to your body. Between working out in the yard for several hours yesterday and continuing to walk 18 holes every morning I was just tired.....

After a day of hard labor spreading mulch, digging holes and raking stone, I pondered whether to go out at all. Excuses, blah blah blah....
Ended up doing 26 tough, hilly miles up in the mountains here in the Shenandoah Park area. I’ve come to the conclusion my Giant is beating me up a bit on the chipped asphalt - perhaps it’s age settling in. Or maybe it was the pitchfork.....
Anyway, life is always good on the bike 😃. Going to look at the Bianchi Infinito with Di2 later this week, and possibly another Defy 0.

There's a hill I've been eying for a while and finally decided to make the attempt last night. It's so steep (steep for me, not necessarily for you all) I don't think I could have done it on the old bike, but the new bike makes many things possible. I had to stop a couple times on the way up because *you must be kidding me* but made it. 29 miles, 68f, sunset into darkness, fantastic evening out.

What heaven looks like to me. 27 miles down, 4 to go with one steep climb to my driveway.
Definitely getting another bike, will need every gear here in the unforgiving mountains. I have no way to measure grades, but they are insane!

Today 5 of us got in a 62-miler. It was a rider's choice because it was his last ride in the Tucson area until he's back in the fall.
Got out early to get ahead of the near-summer temps.
