Interesting 1x setup. I first wondered why the front derailleur was so far away from the chainrings, but after closer inspection I saw there was only one.

I wish somebody here would buy this. It looks like it would fit me, it's not far away, it's cheap, it's red, it's got Columbus tubes and I've never owned a Schwinn, so every time it gets relisted I'm tempted. I really don't have the room or the need, though, and I can't figure out how to disappear for a couple of hours and explain coming home with another bike.

Not a brand I'm familiar with. Seller suggests it might have been made by Centurion.

House brand for REI, I believe. I’ve never seen one this old, but it is in Seattle.

@CO_Hoya yup, Novara was the house brand for REI. They began some time in the '80s or so. The ad is actually mine. I saw a Novara Viaggio touring bike and apart from the Novara label, it was a dead ringer for a 1983 Centurion Pro Tour. It was pretty crazy. The Viaggio was too small for me so it didn't come home with me. This one builds into a nice bike, which I did just to see how it rode (and thus, aid in selling). It'll fit 30mm tires, but just barely.

Fairley Bicycle Co
Higher end Novara's are made in Taiwan by Fairley Bicycle Co, the same company that makes Giant's frames

Nice north of the border find. Marioni, with interesting seat cluster and Campy (I dunno, Graphite maybe?) Small, but cool. I DK about MTN bike, but might be a good thing.

but they are right about the centurion thing- maybe they moved to taiwan like everyone but in the early 80s quite a few Novara were identical to Centurion, and made in Japan

Look at:

which is the exact bike down to the paint and components of a 1986 ironman- just decal swap.

novara:

centurion:

even the same cable housing and seat post

The serial number should determine a maker. Nice looking frame.

The bike is sad. You don't keep horses from running, why keep a bike from riding?

SN is not fully conclusive per T Mar's database thread, but there are decent suggestions that it is indeed Centurion/Centurion contractor-based. The "N (1)" SN format is a direct match.

N4P5950 is the serial number, with N as a constant, the 4 as the year, the P as the month, and the last four numbers as sequence numbers. A November 1984 build would make sense for selling in the 1985 model year.

Pretty original other than wheels and hubs. Looks like it’s my size, but I don’t really need another project right now Perhaps for one of you Francophiles out there? Price is right

Nishiki - I believe Continental for $450 Canadian Looks very nice and that B17 Narrow I'd say nicer than any other I see in Ontario
Per ad:
Vintage Nishiki road bike. Excellent condition. This bike is perfect for getting around town. This Nishiki bike has a light-weight aluminum frame with Suntour components, a recent Brooks saddle, recent bar tape, and year-old tires with lots of tread. It looks great and rides smooth. Was bought last year from a bike mechanic, and has been well maintained. Brakes and gears work well. Chain is in good shape. Frame is about 58cm, a good size for a rider around 6 feet tall

I look through these and think "glad that's not my size"

Anyway,
Found this https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/b...098541491.html.
If I knew someone this would fit, I'd already have it on the work stand.
It's probably priced low enough to convert it back into a road machine and still put in less than it's worth.

Enjoy the build-up. Looks like a worthwhile little project.
