23-miler from encinitas down to solana beach and east to rancho santa fe, then back to cardiff and start point.
newish bike path through cardiff fraught with dog walkers and peds so (as predicted) rode in the regular lanes
(signed with the north county version of sharrows) until solana beach.
also mixed in the usual san diego metro run later on for another 20-spot.

Chula Vista Marina to Coronado and back for 30 miles this morning. Gloomy and cool. I swear one day I’m gonna see a dead body in the Otay river near bike village.

it will probably be that of a cyclist in garish kit heading southbound on the path having just hit that massive grapefruit lump bump on the bike path .5 miles north of bike village.

60-miler in san diego with a friend for 30 miles and 30 solo miles. a mostly overcast day including cabrillo national monument with a tidepool road climb in the hardest gear in the small ring. legs felt good but the hands and arms got quite the workout. bought the nps pass a month ago and need to start incorporating tidepool hill repeats (5 or 6 reps in different gears) to get back into shape. 180 miles spread out over 3 weeks in june ain’t cutting it after three straight 1,000 mile months.

^^^ That hill up from the tide pools would be a gut. The wife and I were there about a year ago and our car had a hard time going up that hill.

one of the few semi-longish descents in the densely populated parts of san diego country that doesn't have a stop sign or stop light at the bottom of the hill. extra bonus points just for that.
personally, i think it's a little easier than the torrey pines grade which isn't as steep (but fairly close) but is twice as long.

it's not that bad. about 7% grade but it's super consistent. pick your pace and stick with it. do it more than once and you know where to up the ante if you're feeling frisky.

Got out for a midweek ride in the Whittier Hills doing repeats in Turnbull Cyn and up Rideout overlooking Sycamore Cyn. Another Perfect day with a couple dozen riders out. Met Roy again the local octogenarian doing repeats in Turnbull. Good for him. Told him he is a bad ass for 80. Pic is from access point to Ridge Fire Rd into Sycamore Park.
40 miles and 6,200 ft of climb.

up the SGRT from El Dorado Park to the top of the dam. 54 miles in all. Left early and didn't run into too much heat on the ride back. That's my farthest 1 ride mileage since I've been keeping track. Total month at 380 miles as of today.

Did the SGRT to the bottom of the dam. 50 mile round trip. Monthly total 430 miles. I feel like 50 miles is becoming my long ride right now but I expect it to be the "mid" mileage ride soon. My goal is a 75 mile loop. I think I should be hitting that in a couple of weeks.

drop down to huntington/sunset/seal beach and head south to newport and do the newport back bay. head north on the irvine bike path.
veer eastish towards the irvine train station and head towards the foothills. intersect el toro rd. higher up (like portola/el toro) and head past cook's corner (or stop
for a beer if going later and so disposed) and head up the shortish (but steeper side) climb of santiago canyon rd. no rush. go as slow or stop and take pics as necessary.
hang a right on modjeska canyon rd. (not!!! modjeska grade rd-still on the uphill) as you're headed downhill and enjoy a scenic, gentle grade
to road's end (about 2 miles one way) and back to scr. continue down scr (passing silverado canyon rd which is a worthy side trip as well but
harder than modjeska cyn rd) all the way to jamboree. you can descend jamboree or continue to chapman and go through old towne orange.
either way then back to los al should net you in the n-hood of a 75 spot loop. plenty of support. with the warm months here, i'd recommend a close
to sunrise start to mitigate the inland scr heat and be done with the foothills by 10:30am unless you like it hot vs cool.

ob,
As always, thanks for the suggestions and encouragement. One thing I will agree with you is getting the earliest start possible during these summer months. I am a very early riser by nature, so a sunrise start is already part of my routine. I don't think I've ever been out on a serious ride and not been back by at least 11:30. Trust me, I do not want to be riding SCR on a hot summer day at 1pm.
I still need to pursue more hill work. My 2 West to East trips on SCR really shinned a light on how much room there is for me to improve in the hills. It doesn't necessarily scare me, it's just that there is work to do. But, I did see a profound improvement in my cardio after those 2 rides. I've been encouraged by it and hoping to make July 2020 a month of bicycling firsts for me.

CAT7RDR,
Thank you. I know you're an expert in that area and I had been thinking of PM'ing you regarding different rides that I could access off of the SGRT. Every so often on the SGRT I'll see a sign that says "this park this way" or something like that and wondered where that would lead. I really need to sit down with a cup off coffee and Google maps one afternoon and get a better feel for the area up there. I also appreciate you posting your RWGPS maps. I've noticed you doing that before along with people posting their Garmin maps and it really helps answer a lot of my questions.
Right now, 1500 ft in 3.5 miles would crush me. But I'm working on it.

Eastlake up Otay Lakes Rd past the college then down Otay Lakes Rd @30mph with a big smile on my face(a group of 10 riders past me going I don’t know how fast, but fast). Through Bonita to the 54 path(strong smell of sewage and smoke from encampments) to Pepper Park then back through Bonita and up an exhausting Otay Lakes Rd(I need to start doing this one more) back to Eastlake. 25 miles but felt like more.

The worst combination is a south facing long steep slope with a 3-5 mph tailwind so you get absolutely no cooling. BT DT! on the way to Crystal Lake.
40 mi loop around the east SGV with 3000' of gain yesterday, but under 4mph on most of the climbs. Boy I'm old! Iffy for SGRR next weekend.

Meandered around Carbon Cyn and Chino Hills before returning via La Habra Heights. Finally ordered some new Giro Berms for my aching feet! Still learning to spin instead of grinding. 70 miles and 6K ft of climb on a cloudy cool morning.

From HB down to Irvine, Jamboree and Newport Back Bay Routes. The Back Bay road was closed to walkers and bikers about 1/2 way through. Anyway, about 35 miles with a couple of old friends. I ended the month with 465 miles which is 2nd best for me. Very happy with my last 2 months mileage.

lived in the south bay for a decade and found the best hill to climb/train on is/was heritage road past the ampitheater (whatever it's called these daze) up to the junkyards/used car spots at the top.
roughly a mile at 6% but super steady grade. pavement recently redone (used to be a gauntlet on the descent) plus the road finally goes all the way through from olympic parkway. used to hit that
grade twice a week before the road shortcut. if i still lived in otay ranch, i'd be hitting the heritage rd (and paseo ranchero and paseo ladera and terra nova climbs) at least twice a week. that north/south ride
of canyon/mesa on repeat was good hill climbing training. otay lakes to avenida del rey to terra nova to paseo ladera to heritage and back to paseo ranchero past the junior high and then down h street
back to and up terra nova is awesome hill training.

I know what you mean. When the wife and I are driving around we're always on the lookout for riders. All of a sudden she say "Look, it looks like a bike path down there with a rider on it".

otay lakes rd and nearby corral canyon rd and san miguel are decent climbs but vary with their pitches/grades.
