Took a day ride from camp that included a valley that is home to many Amish and Mennonite families. A woman pulling out of her driveway on a relatively new Cannondale wished me a hearty “tag.”

I'm returning again in a week for another two week trip - this time taking my fatbike for mtbing and more dive gear along with the SUP. I'm doing the "vanlife" thing so I can just pullover in a rest stop if I can't get a site.

Last year I did the Route of the Hiawatha Trail in ID & MT. There are more than a dozen tunnels. None are lit. Most are short, but the one crossing the state border is 1.66 miles long. There are also several high trestles. If you’re ever out west in the states and like rail trails, it’s a must ride.

Probably for the best this year. I saw some people touring along the Icefield Parkway but a lot of campgrounds and services are either closed or no vacancy. The smaller campgrounds were closed, the main site in Jasper (Whistlers) is closed due to renovations and the rest were only occupying at half capacity to limit/create social distancing. Lots of unknowns. Out of two weeks we could only reserve two nights ahead of time and awoke each morning not knowing if we would have a spot that night, hoping for cancellations.

Emblem, Wyoming-- We met 10% of the population when we stopped by the post office.
Only a piece of parachute cord and a tent stake are keeping me from almost certain death. Actually real parachute cord has a breaking strength of over 500 lbs. The "sheet" pictured on my wife's Thermarest is left over from an 2X T-shirt that my wife cut the sleeves of to make sun covers for her knees (picture above).

I miss doing a long trip....like with most of us, plans got messed up this year.
Oh, I didnt take a real camera, just my cell and a tablet to use where I ended up partway during trip, and I have to say, I really dislike using a cell phone to take photos. Just isn't the same as holding a real camera in your hand with a shutter button. And the whole opening phone app, making sure you dont brush your finger against the video function, or whatever function, is a real pain in the rear.
So I found I took a lot less photos than usual, and didnt bother lots of times to document stuff. Plus I was just getting touring fit so was pretty tired and stiff for the first 3 days anyway.
