Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SS bottles do taste better. If only they could be made to be squishy...

If they tasted water out of a plastic bottle from the 80s they'd probably pass.

I don’t think of the area around here as hilly, but maybe it is, most of our rollers get to the 6-8% range which makes z2 difficult

I could do it here if I had ridiculous gears and didn’t mind poking along alone at 7 mph, but that’s not what I ride for. Also, at age 64 with a job, slow distance is a waste of time. Data suggest old people need lots of VO2max and threshold training and it certainly works for me.

Post ride mid afternoon meal. Up on the roof. #Drifters

I had a grilled chicken chipotle ceasar salad and the Mrs. had the same in a cobb salad. Had an incident with a motorist on my ride.

Same here, I’d rather almost puke from the effort of a hill than take it slow.

At really low power, I wouldn't make a point of keeping your cadence high - just keep the pedals/drivetrain engaged, spinning slow and easy. Like, boring and borderline wrong easy. Additional metrics would help, obviously - HR at least, but you could probably grab a left crank arm meter for under $300 in the coming weeks. The more time you spend in the saddle, the more important it is to vary the effort, I think. Well, if you want to get faster. Just going off of feel, you seem to settle in to a fairly narrow speed range (a spread of maybe 2mph?) regardless of whether you indicate that your effort was easy, moderate or hard. On my shorter rides, I can see a spread of 5mph between easy and hard.

I couldn't really do it until I made a decision to ride every day, regardless of how much I hurt, and boy did I have some hurty days. I quickly found that those easy days helped me recover more than taking the day off, but I'm sure that mileage varies. On my normal 3 day/week riding schedule, I probably wouldn't have the discipline to go easy... but then again, on that schedule, I don't think that I'd have the need to go easy.

Agree on both points, but enduring boredom is worth it if it helps push your z3 and z4 higher.

Oh, I know - I'm fat and there's no such thing as an easy hill, but I think that my ~18mile recovery route is something like 200' of gain, though I do struggle to keep my HR under 110 on that one bridge.

I don’t take many days off, especially after big efforts, because I come back stiff. I also seem fairly tolerant of 700-800 TSS/wk, which, it seems, most people at my age and crappy performance level aren’t.

I guess if you mean REALLY slow... I haven’t almost puked (or pooped) from a hill since my foot racing days, and I don’t remember liking the feeling.
