Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1st problem, you do not have muscular guads, and we aren't looking for her to be appropriate.

Thanks, brother. I hope the meds kick in soon. Feel bad for his wife and kids too. He’s successful, well off, and loved by many people, as if that made any difference. Feels he failed at one stupid job and maybe he did, but now he feels cursed, snake bit, guilty, and incompetent, deep down in his bones. Glad I got a lower dose of those genes!

I hope so too. Most meds take about 4 weeks to be effective. I hope he has a counselor or someone unbiased to talk to as well.

I can tell you from personal experience that there's not a lot you can tell someone with an anxiety disorder that makes much difference, with the possible exception of helping them remember that, as real as their anxieties FEEL, they aren't reality. It doesn't stop the anxious thoughts, doubts, etc., but it can help with perspective.

You can get an anxiolytic effect immediately from a high enough dose, or so the psychiatrists tell me. He has a shrink, but I want him to get CBT to start derailing that thought process leading to “I suck,” but that might have to wait on the meds too.

True. If it weren’t for endurance sports, I would have been on meds several times too. In fact I probably needed them anyway. However I’ve seen a lot of good results from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in combination with meds when needed, and think it’s underused.

It's good that he's taking something for it. It's way too easy to get trapped by "I just need to try harder". There's always someone who will tell you with absolute certainty that you just need to do what THEY did, or tells you 'You don't need medication! You need MEDITATION!" or something similar. You end up seeing yourself as even more of a failure because that didn't work and then you invariably think it's because you didn't try hard enough.

I was discussing the nature of anxiety disorders with a friend who DOESN'T have one. We were talking about the unwelcome thoughts one gets. He said, "I know I cant do anything about it, so I just don't think about it." I think we both got new perspective - him realizing that some people can't do that, and me realizing some people can.

Yeah, that helps. I looked back on all my hobbies over the years - cycling, archery, watchmaking - and one thing I noticed is that they all put me in a different head space.

I need the physical exhaustion and the goodies, whatever they are, which get released by suffering muscles.

My daughter and I once put a bike computer on her mouse-size pet hamster’s wheel for a school project and damn if that little bastard didn’t run 5-10 km/night. I know why.

First off, I hope your brother does ok and all works out.

Secondly, I'm currently taking online CBT courses to help with my mercurial moods due to my Eligard injections. It's helped a lot but I still have a long way to go. I'm determined to stay off meds this round. I wasn't so lucky in 2009.

I don't need physical exhaustion to suffer.

Mrs datlas made 3 pies. One was standard margherita, one was goat cheese/sun dried tomatoes/olives, and one was pesto/fried onions/goat cheese. All 3 were delicious.

3 of us rode 60 miles today, very similar to the route from 2 weeks ago except this time there was no headwind. It was in the 40s at the start and got into the 50s but the sun did not make an appearance. It was a good day.

We had spaghetti marinara with big roasted portobellos on top.

Washed it down with a decent Montepulciano.
