Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is this on bottom of frame?

What is this thing circled on the bottom of some S-works frames?

Yeah, I first saw it on a 2018, but not on a 2019. I thought, "that thing is ugly, I will look for a 2019" Then I saw it on a 2019. Good to know it is likely removable.

They are training us to accept the inevitable ugly e-bikes. Same with the oversized downtubes.

Specialized call it their SWAT box: storage/water/air/tools. Newer models actually have a SWAT cavity in the downtube, no external box.

Butt ugly, and makes it look like an E bike.

A frame bag is cool if you need it… That box? Fugly.

It looks ugly, but it works. I took it off originally but ended up mounting it back up on my Roubaix. It neatly holds a spare tube, CO2 cartridge and inflator head, multi-tool, and tire lever. Plus has space for a folded bill.

If people ask if it is a motor, I just say yes.

That's likely a copy of Trek Emonda bike compartment? That is more elegant solution but very likely you can't stuff in as much as in that external plastic box. Under seat bag is probably the most OK looking external bike storage?

Doubtful as I know Specialized had in frame storage back in 2015 at least and I am sure others have done it as well. Also technically back in WW2 Gino Bartali did carry documents and papers inside frame tubes to hide them from the fascists and nazis in Italy so you could say Leggnano was the first

I do believe the Swat Box requires use of the Specialized tire levers. Can't have Pedros or others in there as they don't fit. In a seat pack I can put a cell phone, two tubes, Pedros tire levers, patch kit, C02 and a snack. Swat Box can't do that. Still need a saddle bag. What's the point other than another 50 bucks in their pocket?

It does use their tire lever but it can fit a tube, co2, small tool, money and love. I use a pocket on my jersey for my phone as well as any snacks for easy access. So if I had a Specialized bike that took a Swat box, I might actually consider it. It is a neat bit of kit and keeps the weight down low instead of waggling at the back up high. Granted I don't so I use seat bags and no real issues there I do get to use my favored tools though I am on my road/fixed gear one stuck with a Pedro's lever rather than my Crank Bros Speedier Lever but I didn't want a big bag for those bikes and if I really need it I have my larger topeak dry wedge which slides right in for those times I do need a crap ton of crap and if I need more I have a backloader or I can use my half frame bag from Oveja Negra.

Personally, I'd welcome well designed and integrated storage built into the frame. Storage that handles a standard pair of tire levers, a tube, etc. The normal things you'd always want with you on a ride. A cell phone can still live in the pocket though.

Seems like the Trek method - removing large section of downtube - does what a convertible does to sports/muscle cars, e.g adds weight, reduces rigidity... which in turn means adding more weight to reinforce the area with the hole. I'll stick with jersey pockets.

So does the middle pocket of my jersey....and it doesn't spoil the look of my beautiful bike.

Let's not get started about the current trend for handlebar bags

One more qualification.. keeps all this weight low, effectively lowering the COG... a distinct advantage for bike handling in my experience.
But if you can all of those items in one jersey pocket, though... more power to you. Post a pic.. must be quite a bulge

The real reason is "aero."
UCI bikes aren't allowed to have fairings & what not, but are allowed to have a tool box. So it's a tool box that coincidentally has some aero benefit.

Some of the newer fancy aero bikes tend to test better in a wind tunnel with a pair of water bottles installed. Go figure.

I'm pretty sure UCI rules prohibit anything inside the main triangle except water bottles, and the shape of those is tightly controlled, The bottle on the Cervelo P4 is definitely not allowed.

It seems you are correct. UCI says v/s what Joe Racer does are 2 different things though.

BMC Time Machine Review.
