Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I appreciate older cars, but from a distance. I had a crazy thought a while back that it might be fun to own a vintage car, like one of the crazy Chrysler Imperials of the late 50s/early 60s. They're just so extreme, and so emblematic of the exuberance of the era. But long before I even thought of taking action on the thought, I asked myself, "Where would you put it? Where would you work on it? Where would you go in it?" and the most important one, "How would you pay for it?", and I realized that it wasn't for me. I'll leave it to folks with money, space, time, and money.

Nah, he is a car guy. Owns a drag racing team and drives the cars. But, he does speculate on buying and selling very high end cars. Here's the FB page for his car company: (20+) Type A Motors | Facebook

I've gone through that same process. For me, it comes down to money and storage. I'm not a wrench, so I'd have to pay for maintenance. I don't have enough of either.

Yeah. I remember going to Stinson Beach once, and found it was a chore not to stare. Totally unused to the idea of public nudity. Not something we did where I grew up.

I can fix bikes, and I can fix watches, and I can keep a few of the former and a lot of the latter in our relatively small house without a problem. But a late 50s Imperial? It wouldn't even fit in my garage if it was empty - which it hasn't been since we moved in!

My wife was more surprised than I was. And, well, I'm just not going to stare at another man. Not my thang. I'll let it be hers.

I was almost expecting to see one of them Capco Boys (Billy or Steve Torrence) owning that site/shop. I know Mama Kay will show up in some exotic here and there, when they drive to the track.

I was lucky a lot of times with them. If they were out of warranty I would price the labor extra high so if they did buy it I could convince one of the other guys to do the work, usually. If it was diagnosis I did it but that was my thing anyway. Plus, some of the other guys were willing to do things I asked so I would help them when they needed it. I got a lot more out of that than I invested in it and I owe some of those guys a debt of gratitude.

$37k for a car you can only drive 250 miles at a time, then have to get lucky enough to find a quick charge location to only spend a half hour at the juice station, or maybe an hour if it's a slow juice station, or forever if you have to plug it into a wall.

Might be nice in town, but not for driving around the west.
