Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just noticed that my rear skewer for the new bike is missing a spring. Is this something most bike shops would have spares laying around?

I'd imagine. It must happen a lot, losing one of those springs.

And now that I'm back from my ride, and showered, and ready for a nice nap, the Greyhound thinks he's due a walk. I guess I can argue that the movement is good for fending off soreness, right?

Yes. But spring is not really essential anyway.

it will work without the the spring? I’m wondering if it was already missing. I took the front wheel apart first and one of the springs popped out and I had to chase it down. The rear wheel I was ready for the spring escapade so I caught it, but I never checked for two.

The springs keep the skewer centered for ease of wheel installation. Once the wheel is in and the skewer is tight they don't do anything.

Ended up doing pads and rotors on my wife's car today.

Any guesses on how long it took? Bonus points for the difference between the first side and the second

I'm somewhat handy with a wrench but working on cars is a pretty rare occurrence for me, so although it was a bit of a PITA at times generally I enjoyed myself. Helped that I could have the garage open and enjoy the nice sunny weather.

As you typed this, I found a post from 2011 where datlas said the exact same thing. lol.
That’s good news. Just got the old but new gp3000 mounted. Held max pressure. So that part is good to go.

Wanted to put the third bike rack on the wall today but I cannot find my drill charger for the life of me. Hate it when that happens.

All four?

My guess is 3.7 hours for the first side, and 1.4 hours for side two.

First side took twice as long as the second side.

About 5 hours start to finish, including cleaning up and test driving.

This was the first time I've worked on a car that lived it's whole life in the north, which presented some challenges. Beginning with not being able to get the wheels off since the rim had corroded to the rotor. I'm glad I found out about that - it would have sucked to get a flat on the road and not be able to get the wheels off to change it. I ended up pulling the rears as well and cleaned them off.

Now that I think about it, though, I'm not sure why I'm so far negative. If Form is supposed to be Fitness minus Fatigue, I should be at -44.

Lol, I actually did need to modify the new pads I bought. The piston side pad has three springs that go inside the counterbored piston so that it stays with the piston when it's retracting. The ones that I bought (that were listed as being compatible with the car ) were spread way too wide to fit so I had to bend them inwards so that they would fit. I almost went back to the store but just went for it and it worked out just fine.

Put some of this on the lug threads. Won’t ever get stuck due to corrosion again.

I just guessed at how long it would take me, and subtracted 30%.

Did you bleed them well when done?

Thanks doc, but I’d like to elaborate further. It’s not a single individual, it was teachers who slapped his wrist. It is always a group decision, we routinely get the opinion of at least two others. This is to eliminate any possibility of the infraction being personally motivated. Probably something most folks don’t realize, but it’s firm policy.

Unfortunately the “messenger” will always get the blame. We put on our big boy pants and suck it up.
