1993 Trek 2300 composite frame
Bought this frameset in 2003 and built up with 7700 dura ace group. As the bike frame is carbon fibre main tubes bonded to aluminum lugs, am wondering as to the integrity of the frame after 30 years.. Have read some posts on this site that tubes and lugs may seperate without any warning.. Any type of inspection I can do to check the saftey of this frame? Knowledgeable posts on this matter appreciated. Small frame 50cm small rider 130lbs

Have you ever noticed any "white powder" near the aluminum frame lugs or dropouts?
Yes? Quit riding it immediately.
No? you should be good to go.
wait... "50cc"??? are you saying you mounted a High vibration source to a Bonded frame?
wow... not a good plan.
good luck to ya.
let us know how much your hospital bills total up to, ok?

Wouldn't 2 socketed joints have to fail for it to collapse?
I would think 1 failure would result in a "spongy/odd" enough feel to know it would be wise to stop.

The top or down tube failing would result in the other failing immediately after.
Old bonds don't seem to be a problem if there is no evidence of a problem.
50cm frames are essentially overbuilt, so there should be even less concern about stress cycles.

Bikes: A Blue One and 2 Green One's, then there's the Yellow one. And oh, yeah, a Black One. Did I mention the Red One?

High heat will cause the glue to fail. Talking HIGH heat, not leaving it in the sun. Things like baking new paint or powder coating. Corrosion finding it's way under the lugs also an issue. Eventually age will be a factor, but us owners of bonded frame bikes are the test bunnies for that.
There's a video on YouTube of a guy that baked the paint on his DynaTech and on the test ride the head popped off...on camera. He's ok. Fun to watch.

The bonding of the seat stays to the alloy seat cluster and dropouts is analogous to the bonding of the fork blades to the crown and their dropouts. I wouldn't anticipate failure, but be aware of changes in ride or handling, and inspect periodically,

he never knew it was broken, and kept thinking his rear axle or seat was causing the "occasional clunk"
the NDS dropout's weld began to crack before the bike got parked due to a replacement being given to him.
the bike was ridden on Eastern Oregon desert two tracks on a frequent basis.
a Univega Alpina with racks front and rear. the racks got loaded up with camping gear on a daily basis..

my nephew's MTB had a weld break on the DS dropout/seat stay junction... he rode it for two years like that.

The headtube has no backup. If the top of downtube fails, that's it.

my Coast King stingray snapped with no warning... at the head tube junctions.
that bike had seen 5 years of extensive jumping(including into a River with a rope attached), thousands of wheelies, Bicycle Polo for hours on end(CRASHES!), and other insane activities.
one last jump with a hard landing broke it in two.
