Fwiw, I dimpled the chainstays on a couple of bikes with the use of a bench vise, a wooden form for the outside of the stay and a screwdriver bit on the inside of the stay. Tighten the vise, and the bit creates a horizontal depression in the stay. Pics here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/8858391@N04/81i89Fvm76

I agree with Gugie.

if the moderators would please remove my snarky posts, so we can get back to helping out one another.
Also, knowing he is in PA, and I have connections with Bilenky in PA. I’ve already made arraignments.

FYI, there are at least two threads for specific specialty tools in circulation:
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...ter-press.html
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...nd-thread.html
PS, I thought Rob's post was funny but much respect for having it deleted so we can focus on obscure tools.

How about a Park HTS-1? I used to have one and never had an opportunity to try using it, but now I have a frame that actually needs it.

I have an offer to make with MAJOR caveats...
I have "loaned" my genuine Stronglight crank-puller to a couple CVers before but it only comes with a couple nonnegotiable accessories: my own two hands.
So has to be a rendezvous either in the local SF Bay Area OR someplace where & when I'll be traveling and we can coordinate like a crack Secret-Ops Team!
The reasoning for all this is that this tool is the "portable" version (or at least it's no shop-model) and whenever I have used it I wonder if "this is it, it's finally gonna break".
So if it's in my hands when/if that ever happens (heaven fore-fend!) I have nobody to blame butme...or rather...
SKINNER!!!

Anyone have a VAR 13 or other pin-type headset wrench that they can loan? Or, any suggestions on where to buy a reasonably priced one?
I recently picked up a '64 Bianchi to go with my '54, and need to get some fresh grease in there....

I have this one that I am willing to lend out. I will want it back as it is part of my tool box, but I can lend it.
It has been powder coated for rust protection and has new pins installed from Wayne at Mel Pinto. I suspect he may be able to see if there is a new or upgraded model that he can sell.
New pins that interchange from bb cup spanner to headset spanner.
PM me. Smiles, MH

I poked around a bit more and the cheap commonly available ones appear come in 4 different sizes. I think there was a full set of 4 for under $50.

btw, some pin tools are entirely useless depending on the placement of the headset hole. Too close to a "bulge", the tool doesn't seat properly. My Bianchi wasn't bad, the Cinelli sucked. I'd bet they had something proprietary at the factory back in the day.

There is a warmness and fuzziness of using a bike specific tool at times. But hook spanners and pin spanners come in many different flavors and some googling will find some options that are cheaper than the McMaster-Carr and other industrial suppliers. Over the years I've bought a lot of them for the shops through McMaster through our purchase order processes because it is quicker than getting an Amazon or eBay purchase approved. But for my own use, I can be more frugal and use other avenues.

Awhile back, when I had the same issue with a three-pin headset, someone posted that the AR-15 Armourers Wrench will turn these quite well.
If you Google these, there are a lot of variations of this tool so I'd expect you want to choose one with a larger stud on the end of the hook.
These are quite cheap and often come with free shipping.

I need to warn some folks, I loaned out my Stronglight puller and received it back damaged. A friend told me a thread file would fix it, so I'll try that.
