BikeForums also tends to over-inflate their tires, which can increase that effect; a little less air pressure lets the casing flex a little, so that the individual knobs don’t get loaded so heavily.
In practice, unless you’re racing or riding in a lot of mud or loam, you can get away with a lot less tread than you would expect. Most of my riding is dry, hard-ish mixed surfaces. I run most of my old 26” bikes on low profile BMX or gravel tires, which are smooth, fast and sufficient for anything short of “Full Attack” race pace.

Just like cars and trucks, tires can make all the difference. Tires get hard, loud, and slippery as they age in spite of ample tread. A tire swap involves minimal cash outlay and time. I like the Specialized Crossroads as a nice compromise that has a grippy tread, nice ride, and is quiet.

My 1983 Ritchey Annapurna was once the coolest mountain bike you could own. I took it on epic tours, including Canada's Northwest Territories. Now, with 1.5" tires pumped to 80psi, it is the greatest town bike ever.

I really like my Surly Steam roller with Bruce Gordon Rock n Roads, enought bite for dirt but roll real easy on the road. These are 650b but the 700c versions should be nice also.

Love the Mt Whitney. Just as a minor point of order Ross did not actually offer the Mt Whitney in 83. Only the Force 1 and Signature Mountain Bike (have never actually seen one of these) in 83. Certainly could have been built in late 83 for 84 model year.
