I don't think that a reflector. It looks like he has one of those BlackBurn flee lights on front and rear.
And I am not sure why he would want to use disk brakes, giving he can't race with them. I say train with the rim brakes too.
And that frame is a Kuota.

I would imagine that you'd lose braking traction (tire gripping the road) long before you'd run out braking ability through the brake pad/rim interface.
Especially in CA, where the roads are likely to be oily, and thus very slick when wet.

^^^ +1 and have deeper carbon rims and tubulars (can't tell if those are or not).
The guy rides thousands of miles a year and has been for a long time.. you don't think he can transition from one bike to another for a race?

I think he has probably forgoten more about racing then you will ever know. I would also say that he has earned the right to train on whatever he wants to train on.

You should contact him and personally advise him of this. Be sure to tell him he will be more successful if he follows your advise.

Honestly, I can't fault him for wanting disc brakes on a wet-weather training bike. I know that whenever I'm riding in the rain and need to stop quickly, it sure feels like it takes forever to get all the muck off the rims before I get any real braking power. My disc-brake equipped bikes, on the other hand, seem to start slowing immediately...

This is just another example of a pro using the equipment needed for the job and not worrying about what he looks like. It's just the opposite on the bike forums where we all worry about how we look and criticize those that don't meet the standard. LOL. Just ride.
