I haven't really put that much though into it. If I classify it as a racing discipline, I'm a good XC MTB racer and a "meh" gravel racer. I spend most of my cycling time riding road bikes, but I don't race them.

If I'm going after actual strengths on the bike...I guess I'd probably consider myself a "puncheur," someone good at short, but steep climbs. I'm not quite a pure sprinter, but I'm not really a TT guy either...I'm good somewhere in the middle. Lately, I've been trying to morph myself into somewhat of a climber, but that's a bit of an uphill struggle. I dropped quite a bit of weight and am competent on long climbs, but I just don't have that ectomorph climber physique.

Even though I do race and take it quite seriously, I don't really define myself by it. If I had to define myself as a cyclist, it might just be someone who's into adventure. I really enjoy racing, but long rides through the mountains might be my favorite things in cycling.

when i was trying to progress in climbing on longer rides, it was becoming a slippery slope with managing a good diet. It was a balancing act [almost] keeping the leg muscle strength, yet be mindful of the mass weight for those peaky peaks.

Downhiller in a flat area. I loved as a kid speeding down snake hill in my village, nowadays a speedbump in the closest I can get to downhill.
Sorry, had to add, they frown greatly upon me using the sand dunes (or the twin spans even further north) to ride down, and nothing hilly unless I drive more than 50 miles north-ish.

Beyond that, no label/specialty or anything like that. I just ride a bike when I can & for fun.

Tell me about it...I used to not really think about my diet that much before. I wasn't overweight or anything, but I wasn't as lean as I could be either. If I wasn't racing or had high fitness goals for myself, I wouldn't care nearly as much. The difference between my current lean "race" weight and the weight that I settle out at if I eat whatever I want, is about 25 lbs.

I've lost the 25lbs this year, by really focusing on nutrition in a way that I never had before. Adjusting calorie intake depending on the ride that day and also adjusting my macros on a daily basis, etc. It's quite a bit of effort, but how good I feel on climbs has made it worth it. On top of that, I'm recovering better than before and have been able to really up the weekly volume of riding, leading to even more improvements.

That's a hard one! I am a lazy one probably and a freezer too. I tried cycling in winter couple of times but every time came back after 30 minutes ride, not more. I guess i need to read Peloton Interactive reviews and maybe stick with this in a cold weather. No matter how warm are my gloves, hands are always freezing during the cycling.

How do you know Ron? We've been friends for years and he usually comes over to my house at least once a month for bourbon night. In fact, he was here with Fran last Saturday to celebrate his birthday and see our new puppies. Two Bernadoodles.

I know him from the 80s when the triathlon team I was on regularly competed against his team. He owned a bike shop in Willimantic if I recall correctly. I raced for Doris Roboto (DJ's Dog Grooming in Manchester). Now I see him yearly at his CX race and try to say hello if he's not too busy.

I've never raced. One of my childhood friends, Alan Grieco, was a sprint cyclist on the '64 Olympic team but that's the closest I ever got to cycling. I was a football/baseball guy. Went to college at AIC in Springfield, MA on a football scholarship. Alan, Jack Simes Jr. and I went to Rockland CC for a year. I didn't take up cycling until the '80's. Ron owned Rainbow Cycles in Willimantic. Bought my son's first BMX from him. That was probably around 1990 or so. We got to be friends years later when I joined Thread City Cyclers. I doubt that you and I have met. FWIW I am 78 yrs old. I'm guessing older than you.
