The thing that always struck me about these bikes was the amazing value. I bought an MT700 frame around 2007, painted and built it with new and used parts off ebay for way too much $$. It was one of the smoothest riding bikes I have ridden, but it was stolen after a year, so I started looking for a 750 in my size. It took a few years of haunting the local CL listings, but I finally scored with this '97 model. The 21" frame is a bit large, so I got a VO "Postino" bar and moved my hand position back.
I'm not a bike historian, but I don't think there were too many models of bike that could be used for the "adventure touring" type of riding when this line came out in 1990. The MSRP for the 750's in the day was under $600, when the Trek 520 was going for $1000. Many people did fit them as touring bikes.

Our 750s could be twins! I love the handlebar you have on yours, and the fenders. The 1997 models look so sharp, with the Inkwell Blue paint and the silver trim.

I addd some fenders & a rear rack. Fenders still need some tweaking and a front rack is in the works.
I really like this bike.
I really like this bike.

Y'alls 750s are making me jealous! A friendly forum member gave me a lead on a local 750, but for some reason the seller has a communication problem...oh well.
On a different note- I bought a new headset for my 720, and from my research, it looked like I needed a 27mm crown race model, but of course, when I removed the old one, it was 26.4! I just switched out the bearings for now, and I will have to pick up another headset at some point...

I changed my trekking bar setup just slightly today, so that it's at about a 45 degree angle. And then my daughter and I went out for a ride. It actually made a tremendous difference in both comfort on straights and also (a total surprise to me) efficiency in climbing. I felt like I had twice the power or twice the endurance when climbing, being able to more or less pull the side "straights" of the bar straight back toward me. It seemed to give me a ton of leverage on the bike. I don't stand up to climb, and I guess something like this helps a lot. Again, totally unexpected, but I really love the setup now.
We can pick up our park's MUPs across the road from our neighborhood, so we went to the park tonight and went back to where the hike/bike trails are. I wouldn't exactly call it "single tracking", but we did romp through the woods some. I'm absolutely loving this bike. Between the flexy frame and fork, the trekking bar which actually "gives" a little with impact, and the high volume 42mm tires I run at 25/50 psi front/rear, it's a super comfortable bike, even off road. At these pressures, I'm a little ginger with tree roots and I pick my lines carefully (I don't exactly bomb down rocky trails at speed anyway), but the comfort on the gravel we ride is absolutely worth the trade off.

151 miles of Nebraska's famous Gravel World. Over 11000 feet of climbing. Did it on my $30 redmultitrack.
No picture of course. All 250% of my smartphone battery was used up for my rideWithgps apps.
https://ridewithgps.com/trips/17028875
and yes it died down 6 miles before the finish.

I love that baby carriage in the first pic. I might get one and drag it around on the days I want exercise but the traffic is heavier than Sunday morning. I'm sure cars would give me a wide berth.

Wow, how did I miss this thread?
The 19" 730 at the back was my first bike, purchased new in 1995, and the 21" in the front was purchased 6 years ago.
This was the final iteration of the 21" 730, before I swapped everything over to a Karate Monkey.

I made an account just to reply to this thread. This is my trek multitrack 700. It is the first bike I really learned to ride as an adult when I moved to SoCal. I grew unsatisfied with it and bought a newer road style hybrid but I really came to appreciate this bike after the other was stolen. The drop bar conversion and saddle are the first changes I’ve made to it and I’d be interested to know what people would suggest.

I love mine, just rode it today. Anyone else have this color combo, I have never seen another one.

2001 7700 MultiTrack
Got this one for free. Per the Trek brochure for 2001 this was their "Top of the Line" hybrid for that year. It weighs a ton. I pulled this out of someone's trash and it appears to be 100% stock. I'm using it as a "beater bike" for now. The Nexave group that is on the bike is really funky. I'd like to replace it with a more current setup/group and lighter parts but I need a bike for the gym and shopping, and since it was free I don't want to drop a lot of money on it.

I'll never understand why Trek gave up on the steel Multitrack. I have two of then and an FX and actually like the heavy build of the Multitrack. I don't feel either bike as better than the other.

Update: 2018 520 Disc is a chromoly touring bike. Swap out the drops for a flat bar, maybe wider tires, and you have a modern steel multitrack.

My new 720's
I picked up a his and hers 720 set off cl. $75 each. The black is a 94 and made tawain. I believe the blue is 98 and is chromoly and made in the USA. Both bikes have original tires with little wear. I think they spent most of there life in a garage. I'm super exciting to get out on a cruise with them!
