All I have to say is my 1990 Mitsubishi Montero is smaller than my Dad's 1996 Buick Roadmaster (both narrower and shorter), does fine with a mere 140hp 3.0l V6 at 160,000mi, will hold 4+ bikes in back with the rear seat folded, gets 21mph highway (w/ 33" tires) and tows our boat nicely as well. It also sees a lot of offroad usage as I'm a member of a 4x4 club, and I spend a few nights during heavy snows in the winter driving up and down the country roads to either recover vehicles that have slid off the road or to offer the motorists what assistance they want. Its a fun truck and its been incredibly reliable. Runs like a top at 160k

I agree. I don't think any serious off roader would choose that behemoth as their ride. The Tahoe wasn't built to carry that sort of weight over any significantly rough terrain.

I'm sorry the tie rod should have stood up to that stab of the gas pedal, but anything that big should also have a solid front axel, a $14000 Wrangler would eat that POS alive, what a crock, I'll stick with Chrysler and Toyota products for actual use and abuse. If H2 owners really want to go off road it looks like they should cram a used $500 Suzuki Samuri in the back and let it handle the rocks.

Talk about an overpriced piece of crap.
How much is a TOYOTA Landcruiser now, 70k?

Yeah, and I thought a 32k Wrangler Rubicon was absurd, at least it performs as advertised.

This thread and ones like it crack me up.
If someone wants to buy an SUV, be that a Suburban, Hummer, Expedition, whatever - big deal. It's called freedom and it's their right. So they never go offroad with it, whoopdeedoo. I've seen a ton of people riding $2k and up bikes that don't *need* to ride such an expensive or exotic bike either.
Oh wait, I've read plenty of posts by people lambasting folks overbuying on bikes too. Funny - it's still their right. Freedom.
Safety? Let's talk about motorcycles before we go too crazy on SUVs. I suppose one could make the argument that in a motorcycle crash, it's almost always only the person on the motorcycle who is affected - therefore they assume the risk themselves. At the same time, I read the other day that 90% of rollovers are single vehicle accidents. Same reasoning should apply.
Isn't the real issue that people drive some of these SUVs like they are cars and not like the truck-like vehicles that they are? Semi-trucks are MUCH more succeptible to rolling over, yet there isn't any outcry against them.
Let's just all take a few steps down off our high horses.
There are just as many discourteous Honda Accord drivers (probably more) as there are Hummer drivers. Let's focus on the real issue - bicycle advocacy and safety education.

I think it WOULD be nice if they went out of style because then most of the SUV drivers would be those who needed them rather than people who went out and bought them just because they were trendy. I agree, people can buy what they like but, for those of us who drive your average-size car it sure would be nice to be able to see past the car in front of us. That goes for being on the bike, too. I can easily see over most sedans but I can't see a darn thing when I'm behind an SUV.

I am shocked and amazed at the number of wheelers posting in this forum. Sweet.
The real problem with SUVs is the sense of invincibility they give uneducated drivers. In the winter around here, particularly at the first snow, the majority of vehicles in the ditch are SUVs. Suckers.
