Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Had a crash today.. Is it saveable?

Hello. I crashed my carbon bike today and the fork broke. Hopefully I can just buy a new fork and be on my way again, but then I saw a mark on the bottom of my headtube.

What do you guys think?

The reality is, I'd probably ride it and keep an eye on it. But I'm not a smart man.

Thanks for the replies!

One more question. Does those silver coloured cups come with the frame or with the headset?

if its carbon, get it fixed.

these guys are in your area.

If you’re in the San Diego area, stop by our shop in San Elijo Hills. We love to meet our customers in person and check out their bikes. But do us a favor, if you’re planning to stop by, give us a call first. We ride when we get a spare moment, and sometimes it’s in the middle of the day.

1703 La Costa Meadows Drive
San Marcos, CA 92078

or drive a little further north and take it to calfee or rrvelo.

I wouldn't even bother buffing that out.

But instead of having a bunch of internet geniuses look at a couple of, how can I make this sound not so impolite..., uh, well, crappy photos why don't you take it to a bike shop and get an opinion from someone that can look at the thing in "reality"?

Any good bike shops in San Diego? I'll bet at least one or two.

I'd ride it. But I'm just as much of an idiot as anyone else.

It doesn't look like something that is going to "give way" though, or unceremoniously dump you on the pavement.

I'd be concerned that part of the cup is broken off, and would want some smart bike person to examine it in real life. May be nothing to worry about, depending on how it interacts with the fork races (whatever they're called).

Hope you're ok after the crash, too.

That's an integrated headset, so the cup is integral to the headtube. The cup fits down onto the bearing on the fork crown. If you can feel that the cup is now out of round...or if you fit the bearing into the cup and notice that it's not turning smoothly, then I'd say there's a problem.

Somewhere it was mentioned that if carbon is exposed like that and water comes in contact, it might spread. If that's true, I'd recommend fixing it.

It's probably just resin that broke off, but maybe not... there's a chance it's weaker now.

If so, the next time you have a similar prang, expect more damage.

I'd still ride it. If you want the peace of mind take it in to a shop and have them take a look at it.

It's up to you how far you want to go over the bars. Can't see any cracking at that angle. Definitely set a fatigue point, though.

Id take it to get looked at at a shop but you can do the coin test on the whole area including top and down tube plus there are other other tests - google a few to find any obvious problems that are not immediately visible. Personally I wouldnt ride it, you survived this acident how stupid would you feel if you caused the next one yourself.

Although the fibers appear damaged in a non critical place there is no way of knowing that, carbon is often laid up around corners to fully anchor the fiber so it is effective in the critical zone which may be an inch away - thats the down tube or top tube?. No one on here can advise from a photo. What frame is it?
