Why are there more alum as opposed to carbon cx bikes??

Notices
Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Why are there more alum as opposed to carbon cx bikes??

Cross racing is too tough to attract bike fashionistas. (I can say this without ego as my doc and gf have forced me to agree that racing is impossible for me - I have too many foot problems and the running would very probably leave me with a broken ankle.) And the people who do invest heavily to compete know that a CF frame is far down the priority list - you need a battery of high end tyres (and maybe wheelsets) first, and then your next buy should probably be a second bike... You're also going to burn powertrain components up faster than roadies.

No. This is just one (of many) Silly Things That People Believe About Bicycles: https://www.63xc.com/scotn/metal.htm

cyclocross : bicycle road racing :: cross-country footracing : road footracing

And FWIW carbon fiber hardly qualifies as an exotic material these days.

And why is it only in the fall?
, because it was started
as a way to maintain fitness thru the off season on the road.

no History is learned anymore .. doomed to repeat the mistakes ..

Cross racing is too tough to attract bike fashionistas.
Except in Portland Oregon, it attracts them, there..

I know how it started (early 1900's i think); however that doesn't account for why there aren't other races all year in 2012.

We need soem tough muddier, cyclocross duathlon races!

"Tough Mudder" is a fad.

Cyclocross is a sport that has stood the test of time and evolved into something which is beautiful and, essentially, perfect. It doesn't need to be effed with.

You'll grow to understand this.

Tradition, tradition, tradition. That time honored way of keeping the status quo.

There actually are races (& rides) for cyclocrossers year round now. You just need to know where to look. Among others, near me there were some late January races (that I just found out about, but might partake next year) There are several "spring classics" that are great for the cross bike and Kansas (?) has a 300 mile ride geared toward cross riders.

Earlier this year there was one at Laguna Speedway. As the sport is growing, so is the number and breadth of the rides & races. Unfortunately, the ones in the CX off-season have to compete with road & MTB rides & races which dilute them a bit.

Some things just work better in the fall and winter, USFL revival notwithstanding.
