Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

1st bike purchase in a while...finally settled on a cyclocross but need advice

Hi. I was convinced I needed a hybrid but after a few weeks of test rides and much research, I am now set on a cyclocross. My quest originally started looking for a light hybrid or flat bar road bike capable of being a good street commuter but also solid on loose dirt and bike paths. My LBS and a few posters recommended a cyclocross. I was unaware of what they were and after some due diligence, here I am. I am 6'2". Not sure if height is an issue but just in case. I will be riding 25 miles per day round trip to and from work. 50/50 street and loose dirt path. I've looked at Kona Jake model, Salsa Casserole, and researched Bianchi Volpe, All City Space Horse, and Swobo a bit. I'm looking to buy/order this week and appreciate comments and input. Price range preferred $600-1,000, but willing to spend a couple hundred more if it makes a significant difference. Thanks in advance.!

All of your bike choices seem to be very popular models. I think you'd end up liking any of them. I only have experience with the Kona, and I believe they are a little more road and aggressive, which is why I settled on one. With road tires, it to me feels like a road bike. Scott and Fuji make some nice CX bikes around that price range. Test ride a few, and see what you like. With a spare set of wheels you could have more riding options.

Hey there Azforme!

I think you'd do very well with a cyclocross bike. I would recommend the following:

The Surly Cross Check ~ $1150
https://surlybikes.com/bikes/cross_check

The KHS CX 100 ~ $910
www.khsbicycles.com/05_cx_100_12.htm

The Trek Steel Cross Lane ~ $1210

Good Luck!

PS.

If you're thinking about buying aluminum then you might wanna check this one out:

The Motobecane Fantom Outlaw ~ $1000
www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/outlaw.htm
( Get the brushed silver model only. It's gorgeous!)

I have a 2012 Bianchi Volpe and love it. I ride daily on road and path. I also looked at the crosscheck but went with the Bianchi and I'm glad I did. It's an all around sweet bike.
