Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who here diets?

Semester ended and I weighed 151 about 2 weeks ago. Today I'm 147 from eating baked chicken breasts and baked sweet potatoes. I drink strawberry smoothies every night and in it I normally throw in a banana and plain Greek yogurt. I just made a batch of steel cut oats with organic peanut butter (the watery ones) enough for the rest of the week for my morning portions and I might put a teaspoon of plain yogurt in it as well.

I'm thinking about buying Optimum Nutrition and putting it into my shakes. Is it okay if I'm trying to lose weight? I'm going for 140 by the end of the summer.

Thanks
Jason

You're trying to get down to 140 and you're a man? How can you possibly be overweight anywhere close to that weight unless you race horses as well. If that's the case I suggest installing a vometorium in your home.

i try to keep up with calories so i don't lose any more weight. im 5'9" float around 135lbs, was 140-ish before i started cycling.

i got too low not too long ago at 128 lbs so i make sure to eat more.

I'm a man and I'm trying to get to 140 too. I also happen to have a 29" inseam.

Finally came home today after a 2000 mile road trip, a 7 day cruise, and another 2000 mile road trip. Cruise positive: unlimited desserts. Cruise negative: having to walk everywhere. On a 950 foot long ship, it all adds up. Weighed myself at 158.1. Need to resume pedaling and to stock up on veggies.

you can have a healthy diet, but dieting does not work long term.

Unless changing your diet is a lifelong commitment, as is mine.

Go high carb, high calorie from raw fruits and veggies, and low fat. Lose the dairy and limit the meat consumption. I've been pretty much vegan for some time now and don't have any issues riding.

If by diet you mean being generally conscientious about eating whole and natural foods in small portions and ensuring adequate protein intake and hydration on a 24/7/365 basis, then yes, Im dieting.

I'm on a 1500 calorie diet at the moment. I limit my riding time because of it, If I have a long ride coming up I'll up the calories...I did the dukan diet and lost 12 lbs (and kept it off) rather quickly but the lack of carbs made riding hard, so now I'm just watching my calorie intake...went from 170 to 158 and now I fluctuate between 156-158 but its because I've been cheating myself.

I am trying to diet.....I am 120lb right now, I want to get around 105-110 by the end of summer. I am going to start riding more after school ends in two weeks, so hopefully I will lose some weight. I am trying to not eat any sweets right now....but it's kinda hard because I LOVE chocolate.

I'm watching what I eat but not doing to good with my "diet". I am down 60 pounds since about 22 months ago. Still have another 20 - 30 pounds to go.

I have modified my diet, which results is weight loss. it is very slow, but entirely maintainable. I am overweight and my bike knows it. I try to keep away from simple sugars and starches. It seems to be working very well.

Jason,

You're a college student? You're supposed to do nothing but drink beer, eat slim jims, and cup cakes.

Come on, you have a whole life ahead to worry about getting fat

You know you're supposed to mix that up (stirring with a butterknife works well) and then put it in the refrigerator to keep it from separating, right?

As a diabetic, I'm not "dieting" per se, but I'm always conscious of following a general eating plan. Several have already touched on it. Lean protein sources (white meat such as poultry or pork, soy, legumes), mono unsaturated fats (nuts, olive oil), plenty of green vegetables, and complex carbohydrates derived from whole grains, sweet potatoes, and generally high fiber sources. I go easy on sweet fruits like oranges, melons, bananas, pineapple, etc., and concentrate on apples and berries. Occasionally will have a treat like a small dish of ice cream.

If you're putting serious miles on the bike, you need to maintain a certain caloric level, but where you get those calories from is very important.

1500 calories (daily) is quite low for an active adult.
