This was my first race and I was leading the main pack when I decided to attack on a familiar climb. Unfortunately the course was changed the week before the race and I was too stupid to double check the route. When the route took me to a different climb, I decided to wait up for the pack. Big mistake. Nobody knew who I was and the pack decided to chase at nearly 30 mph. Needless to say when I was swallowed up by the peloton, I was promptly spit out the back. It was a lonely ride to the finish. Live and learn.

hey that's 362473x better than sitting in the pack like most ppl do every race because they're afraid of failing and not learn their capabilities. i admire people who do this. nice job.

No kidding, especially in your first race! Your only error was in not knowing the route exactly. Next time!

We opted out of the early ones because it was too cold.

Me and another person were supposed to go to uva and jeff cup but we were going to get there at liek 1am saturday and opted to race locally

Were bringing a big group to wake.

Might be at vtech.

definatly going to be at nc state

Its our first official year as a team.

Was your number flapping in the breeze annoying you at all?

Since I stayed out of the wind all day until the final 2 minutes, I never noticed it. During those two minutes, I was suffering too much to be annoyed by the flapping but I was certainly aware that it was serving as a small parachute. I'm still working on number placement and next time I'll put a pin in the middle.

ha. you should crumple it, then wrinkle your jersey underneath when you pin, and don't use the holes.

how long did you stay away until you blew up? perhaps time to adjust you hr max. I reach 99% of mine all the time so I think I'm off as well.

Yeah I was thinking, no wonder he's working so hard! On a related note I use this stuff called Grizzytape to tape my numbers on. It works great and leaves no residue behind like the spray on glues can.

Here's a little saying I learned:

In the number, in the jersey, out the jersey, out the number.

The stuff works great on jerseys but WILL NOT stick to a skin suit. I found this out the hard way as I was rolling off to the start line for the State TTT championships. I had my buddy stick the number on and it flew off within 5 feet of the car. I've used it now for a season and half and never had an issue. It's great for stage races because you can just peel off the number and stick it on a clean jersey.

That's a good one. Also 6 pins: corners, front edge, middle.

lol, he's talking about rather than just hanging the number off the pins, where it flattens out, you pin it flat to the jersey. Think about how you'd pin it if you just had a straightpin -- pin it like that, but lock it since you have a safety pin. Much less flapping that way.

Well, I didn't blow up. That picture was taken just before I crossed the line 50 yards ahead of the field.

I was kidding about the heart rate. The highest my HR has ever been measured in a lab was 195. It got to 194 just after I crossed the line.
